Powerlight is an immaculately produced and sounding album.....glossy in feel, and instrumentation. and maybe that is where the fault lay.....Yes, 'Fall in Love with Me' and 'Side By Side' were EWF tunes, but the slickness in the production of the album caused it to be less funky and in a strange way, tired sounding.
Those two songs are great, but the other songs put me to sleep. It's a boring album. It really feels like they were just going through the motions.A very uninspired album.

(1) Faces - yes, I said it (2) Raise (3) Powerlight (4) Touch the World (5) Electric Universe A toast to you, Dancelot!!!!! Stand up for FACES....lol.... as for the 90s and 00s "The Promise" stands high above the rest

Any love for 'Millenium'? It's absurd how many great songs are on this album! "Even If You Wonder","Sunday Morning","Wouldn't Change A Thing About You","Love Across The Wire",etc.

Straight From the Heart which is one of the better Phillip Bailey sung ballads could have been a single as well as the brassy synthesized Speed of Love which was my favorite on the album and the funky Spread Your Love. Don't laugh at my funk

You're the first person i know who said this was a great album. Just about everyone i know labeled it a bust. I even remember when i bought it the record store clerk said he only liked two songs Even if You Wonder and Sunday Morning. Now there are some good songs but for me it was mediocre for the most part. In addition to the aforementioned songs i liked Honor the Magic,Blood Brothers, and probably about two other tunes. I'll give it another listen because in the musical climate we're in now albums that seemed to be a disaster back in the day can all of a sudden sound good now. Straight From the Heart which is one of the better Phillip Bailey sung ballads could have been a single as well as the brassy synthesized Speed of Love which was my favorite on the album and the funky Spread Your Love. Well, Powerlight is good....but if I have to be honest, it isnt great. I liked certain tunes alot....Fall In Love with Me, Side By Side, Straight From the Heart, Something Special (love the horns as the songs fades out...), Hearts to Heart (I always felt that they could have had a hit with this one if it was released as a single..oh well!)..but to my ears, there is a languid sort of feel to the album that even the uptempo songs don't really percolate.... Millenium is a very good album.....my main negativity with it is I cannot get with the synthesizers, and the drum machines thruout.....I felt like saying, Maurice, this isnt how EWF should sound!!!, but there U have it... Regardless....the songs are tight.....Bloodbrothers is up there IMHO as one of the best EWF tunes period...words, vocals, horns, everything that is EWF is there on display...I could play the outro over and over again.....man, those horns get me all the time!!! Sunday Morning is cool, The L Word is interesting in a strange way...."Cigarette smoke hangs just like a curtain, makes me wonder if her loves for certain".....pretty heady lyrics for EWF and Maurice!!!!....Love Across the Wire always reminded me of a typical Stylistics tune....but when U have Thom Bell co-writing, it is not too hard to expect that....and hey, give some love for Chi-Town Blues....probably one of the very few times that Maurice wrote a song that actually had a biographical slant to it.....most EWF tunes did not give U any overt insight into any personal life stories they may have had.... [Edited 3/23/10 10:55am] What was Reese's input on this album... wasn't this Sheldon Reynolds baby? Sheldon did co-write Sunday Mornin and I do recall an interview in which Maurice said that Sheldon was valuable in terms of bringing back the EWF slant to their songs....which makes U wonder when Maurice realised (probably after Heritage and the rap!!!!) that their forte was being true to themselves, their sound and their message..... Maurice of course was involved in the production and writing, and of course on lead...so I dont think of it as a Sheldon project, however, he was apparently involved to help keep the legacy EWF sound in the forefront.... Not sure if Maurice was feeling the effects of Parkinsons in terms of his vocals since Sheldon really only began to sing lead starting on In the Name of Love....so unless there were other factors, his involvement to the extent he had writing credits was interesting, especially since he was the baby in the group..... On a side note, That is probably why In the Name of Love is my very least favorite EWF album of them all.....

I'll give it another listen because in the musical climate we're in now albums that seemed to be a disaster back in the day can all of a sudden sound good now. I love this album! It contains a bunch of well-chosen tunes and it's the album that truly took EW&F into the 90s.It's much stronger and consistent than the album that came before it ('Heritage') and the album that came after it ('Avatar'/'In The Name Of Love').The highlights for me are... *"Even If You Wonder"---This sounds like classic EW&F,but with a 90s beat. *"Sunday Morning"---This song also sounds like classic EW&F,but with a 90s twist.I love the "Serpentine Fire" sample that appears in the middle of it. *"Honor The Magic"---a very nice latin-flavored tune.Breezy and infectious. Our local quiet storm station played this one alot. *"Wouldn't Change A Thing About You"---I consider this song to be a lost classic. This could have been the first single.Philip Bailey SHINES on this tune!! Nice melody and lyrics.A wonderful, wonderful song. *"Super Hero"---written by Prince, this is one of the strongest uptempo jams on the album.Powerful message and arrangement. *"Love Across The Wire"---This album contains a good amount of ballads and slow jams, but this is the best one.Written by Thom Bell,it contains a great melody and chorus.Gorgeous song!! The album contains a few weak tracks."The L Word" and "Just Another Lonely Night" don't leave much of an impression. But the highlights are plentiful.
