If Neverland wasn't so stupidly expensive to run, it could have become a wonderful tribute to MJ - instead of the idea to charge MJ fans $1000+ to gather round some trench in Gary, Indiana and watch his hanger ons try to carve a career out for themselves, Neverland could have become a nice retreat to remember him and continue as a place for sick/disadvantaged kids to go at the same time. It was all just the wrong timing, plus we'll never really know how MJ truly felt about the place post-trial. There are too many conflicting reports from his crazy siblings. I don't think anything permanent or successful will ever be done in the realm of a Graceland for MJ fans until his kids are in full control of the estate. The rest of the Jacksons couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. I was in Memphis a few years ago and decided to check out Graceland. Not being a huge Elvis Presely fan, I went for the curiousity/legend of it. All I can say is, the out and out "horribleness" of this attraction probably has to be one of the best kept secrets going in the tourism industry. It was a cattle call line of buses going in and out of the house, (of which easily 3/4s of it was not for public viewing). The lion's share of the tour was spent walking between four or five aisles of old costumes, gold/platinum records, awards/etc....45 minutes and 30 or 40 dollars later, you're done. If this costed 5 or 10 bucks tops, whatever. It might have been worth it just to be able to say you went. I would even grant that perhaps if you worshipped Elvis and he was one of your heroes this might be worth your time, but to the average Joe/Jane, it felt like a total rip off. Hurry up - your bus is leaving.... Wait didn't I just get here? Conversely, the National Civil Rights Museum, (where MLK was assassinated) was very well done. Well the surrounding area is certainly still no walk in the park, but the immediate location was definitely done a up a little bit. Apparently the last official tenant in the motel was forced to move out when they wanted to convert it to the museum. She still sets up a protest vigil every day/week. It's actually pretty depressing as she was summarily ignnored. Any way although Memphis is certainly is not a booming metropolis, it was an 8 hour road trip from Dallas so some of us took a chance at checking out Graceland/the Museum/ Beale St/a ball game etc....one weekend. We all came away feeling the exact same way about Graceland. And one of us was a fairly big Elvis fan. | |

question for all you MJ-heads....
in your opinion, do you think Michael Jackson would've liked to see his ranch become an amusement park? and is that place really gone now? where'd all that damn stuff go? you know damn well some staffers or someone got there hands on some good shit.

Well, Before Michael passed away, he had no intention of moving back there but he wasn't willing to let it go and I think he was planning on doing something with the property. He had been thinking of setting up a Michael Jackson or Jackson Family museum since the early 90s too. All the stuff in Neverland..... most of it is part of the Michael Jackson Exhibition at the o2 Arena in London and another exhibition in Hong Kong. The exhibition was in LA back in May I think, right Timmy? anyway, someone I know on a MJ board went to the LA exhibition and took pictures thanks to SameDifference on KOP for the pictures
