My favorite is the title cut, very Stevie Wonderish. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

Really? I've always thought the song sounds like a tribute to Donny Hathaway, esp the fender rhodes and singing.

What you want might make you cry
What you need might pass you by If you don't catch it And what you need ironically Will turn out what you want to be If you just let it I relate to the album as a WHOLE, but mostly this song. Love her version of the Frankie Valli song I was in love when I heard it the 1st time in Conspiracy Theory.

i used to play this album all the time . i guess my favorites are ex-factor, doo wop (that thing), final hour and tell him (which i'm listening to right now ). all of them are pretty decent though. i even liked her unplugged album when she was just starting to crack. she was such a cutie too . hope she gets it together and does something cuz she was really good For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I like it as a piece, but I guess "Ex-Factor" and "Tell Him" are my absolute favourites.
With Ex-Factor, I like that it sounds so genuine and heartfelt, and how it perfectly captured something musically that looked backwards and forwards at the same time. And with Tell Him, it's just so simple and a bit awkward and 'unpolished', but that only adds to its charm. Plus, I think, lyrically, it's a very nice take on 1 Corinthians 13, but again it sounds like there's a genuine relationship with the text there. Thinking about it, I also kind of like the way, even though it's a devotional song, it doesn't have a more conventional 'gospel' sound. All a bit like what I used to like about Prince in days gone by, in some ways. "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

so she had a couple kids....an unplugged album...then what? why'd she practically fall of the face of the earth? is she not interested in making music anymore? i heard someone say she became a hot mess. i hope that's not true. LOVE ♪♫♪♫ ♣¤═══¤۩۞۩ஜ۩ஜ۩۞۩¤═══¤♣

almost every relationship I've ever had. preach lauryn! She said that this song took as many takes as she could, because by the time she reaches 1/2 way through it, she'd end up crying. The song is def emotionally charged,,,,I always get a lumpy throat at the end when the doo-wop background take it to the end.

I can't speak to what might have happened in her personal life, or what what happened to her professional one either, but she'll always have the bragging rights to having put out an amazing hit record. I loved/love every cut on this CD, and even loved the cover. The entire effort was a hit, and I was certain the sky was the limit for her at that point. Life can be very interesting when you think about it.

I remember going to see her tour in support of this album and she was playing the theatre @ Madison Square Garden and people was starting to get inpatient and in walks Prince and Mayte and after they were seated the lights went out and Lauryn Rocked it!!!!
Sidenote She had a segment when her and the band battled the dj.. she would sing a old school song and then the dj would come back with a old school track (trying to top each other.. She sang Don't Stop Til You Get Enough and the dj came back with When Doves Cry... the place went crazy and it was cool that he was sitting in the audience

It's really great, should have been released officially.

Wow, you picked one of my favorites. Thankfully you didn't ask us to narrow it down to one song. Modern day classic. This record mastered paying homage to past influences without sounded contrived or dated. She also had contemporary songs that were ahead of their time. Beautiful mix of live instrumentation and studio programming. The entire background vocals sounds like the Bob Marley's "I Three's".
Lost Ones - Watch out Wyclef....Dope delivery. Love how taunting it was. "You just lost one. What a bum bum" I loved how aggressive she was lyrically too. Ex-Factor - This one seemed to resonate with everyone I knew. I believe her hurt was contagious. Santana kills his solo of course. Final Hour - Her rhyming skills are on full display here. Can't Take My Eyes Off You Tell Him I Used To Love Him - Always loved the harmonies throughout the song. Nice message. It even features a decent MJB before she enrolled in screaming school. I'm stopping now... Oh BTW, Tell Alicia Keys to get her own vocal style too. Yes, if you ask me, she bit her style hard. No, AK doesn't sound as good as Lauryn. Hell no. But she bit her singing style hard to me. She replicate certain runs and phrases often.

This is one of my absolute all time favorite albums, actually I think it's number 3 on the list.
Every song to me was a hit....I never skip to the next song, because I want to relive the whole album again and again....to me that is what makes a great album when every song takes you there. I saw her at NJPAC in Newark and trust me the energy was HIGH cuz she was one of us coming to perform for us in her city....I bought only one ticket and was 2 rows from the stage.I actually felt honored! She was ELECTRIC, I mean just BRILLIANT. The whole evening was mind blowing and I stood there like Ms. Hill wrote specifically those songs for me. She would go pass me on the stage and look directly at me at some points...need I say the tears flowed....I cannot describe how powerful that moment was for me. I wish so bad that she would just do it again...just take us there one more time. "A Man Can't Ride Your Back Unless It's Bent" MLK 4/3/68
