The "My Tastes Are Superior To Yours" Game

I don't get it, really. What is it that makes people feel the need to talk trash about people, just because they're popular, or because people actually like them? Just because you think your tastes are better than someone else doesn't mean that they are. Every has different tastes, so why do people constantly feel the need to rag on people for liking who they like. Shouldn't the fact that I like the person be enough justification for me to listen to them, and should I really have to hear someone's commentary about how much they suck?

People, help me understand the need to piss on everyone else and their tastes.

let us enjoy ourselves, this rhythm is ill. i want to sit on your penis

It's annoying though, isn't it? Can't people just be happy that others like what they like, and leave well enough alone?

I don't rag on people for thinking Michael Jackson is/was the be all and end all of music, even though I disagree with them. They like what they like for a reason, and I'm not in the position to rag on them (aside from some lighthearted jokes here and there) for it.

and yeah, i guess it's kind of annoying, but seeing as i have pretty horrible taste in general and don't feel that i'm in a position to tell anyone what they ought to like or dislike, i really can't answer this question. lol

Yeah I don't really understand that. Like OK, there's people who are fans of folks I don't like but I don't have a problem with them liking them. It's a preference/acquired taste and I don't understand people would try to argue with anyone about who they like. Makes no sense.

I don't think it's all about superior tastes.

What I dislike is people who claim to be an expert on music, yet only listen to one type of music or artist.

Like an "avid" reader who only reads Harry Potter..... I love Harry Potter, but are you really an well educated diverse commentary if you only read one series.

Again anyone can have an opinion, but a viewpoint with reference to musical styles and reasons is what I am looking for, just from the point of discussion.

It's like Facebook.... everyone "likes" something, but why? .... I want details like kick drum was recorded with grandma's telefunken 59 mic.... or the modulation in the chorus to another key.

Those things spark my personal interest.
Music is the best...

Just because someone doesn't like a given artist or criticizes them doesn't mean they are telling other people they can't listen to them or shouldn't enjoy them. Try not to take things so personally.
There are lots of artists whose music and singing I can't stand, but I would never tell someone they can't like them if that's their personal taste.

Well, a lot of them hate anything that's black so that doesn't surprise me. Hell, it was them that hated disco so much.

But as far as the funk crowd shitting all over shit hop, I'm all for it. I'm all for "live and let live" and I rarely shit on other genres except for shit hop. But when you have a shitty genre that's cheap and keeps funk or anything fun, danceable, and good out, I'm all for shitting on it all up and down and side to side and stomping on it afterwards. I encourage others to do so also. evillol

That's what message boards are for - to discuss opinions. Some will agree, some won't. No need to be thin-skinned about it. Just because someone doesn't like a particular artist that you may like doesn't mean they think they have superior musical taste to you.

It's not that people don't agree with me that annoys me. It's the constant shitting on artists and bands because you don't like them. Like I said, I don't like Michael Jackson, but that doesn't mean he's any less of an artist, or a musician, and I don't have a right to shit on him just because I don't like him. It ruins it for other people when that kind of thing happens.

I try to be fair but lets be honest here; not every so-called artist is talented. What you are proposing is that everyone just has respect for any and every bum (dude or chick) that picks up a mic. Sorry but that's not gonna happen. I think your generation is so used to rationalizing people into "greatness" from hype that many of you have not learned to handle criticism. Some of these entertainers are crap and deserve to be crapped on. The fact of the matter is there are levels of proficiency as with anything else. Everyone would love to reduce it to total subjectivity but its just not the case. Some artists are more proficient, more talented and just plain ol' better at what they do than others. That doesn't mean that you have to like them or their music. You just can't expect people who have been exposed to great artists to accept sub-par artists. Its just not gonna happen. Sorry. Great artists inspire greatness. The rationalization of mediocre artists into greatness is exactly what's wrong with music and it shows. Instead of pretending to accept bullsh*t, when people reject it, sometimes it makes the artists work harder and get better.
You gotta have standards, man. If everybody is a "genius" then what's the point of aspiring to be one?

Yes, but I think it's very hard for most people to separate talent from their own personal taste in certain genres of music. Most of the time when people criticize certain artists it's because they personally don't like their songs or the genre of music they do.
If a person is totally unable to carry a tune or play their instrument at all, it's very unlikely they will get millions of fans or sell out huge venues.
But a lot of people will say someone lacks talent just because they don't like that person's style of music.
Music is not objective like science, it will always be subjective.

Regardless of what people think, there's no reason to shit on someone just because they like an artist you don't, or shit on the artist.

Also, just because someone's not technically talented doesn't mean I shouldn't like them, or people should consider them any less of a musician or artist. Music taste varies by person. I love David Byrne, but there are people who think he's a talentless hack who just half-sings through his songs. Guess what? That's their opinion, and I respect that. But they don't shit on me just because I like the man. All I'm asking is for people to respect the fact that people have individual tastes.

i'd like to add a couple other things:

when someone is listening to someone like say Britney Spears (obvious choice), or 'bubble gum' pop of the day...people assume that the listener is taking that as some kind of masterpiece. rolleyes heaven forbid they just MIGHT be listening to it for fun. nothing more nothing less! if they think it's a masterpiece then to them it is. no one is right or wrong.
those "snobs" usually don't know much about music if they're putting that much effort into thinking people are having some kind of epiphany or revalation while listening to Britney, Jonas Brothers, or whatever they deem trash. i think for some of those "snobs" they think EVERYTHING has to be sooo deep and spiritual. everything has to be hard or thought provoking. perhaps they're lacking that in their life and need everything to be deep and meaningful. sometimes people need to listen to fluff or something just fun and uplifting without all the pretentiousnous. and guess what? IT'S OK. CALM DOWN!! lol

and yes..if all you fill your ear/brain with is 'fluff' then there might be a problem. lol.

during my time on this forum; i've made threads about classical music, world music, underground, jazz etc. and 99% of the time, those threads fade into the 10th or 100th page with little or no response. doesn't bother me. obviously pop music or hit radio is what is, oh what's the word... POPULAR around here. lol.

while online i usually listen to pop or something fun. it's candy. i have just as much music in my collection that i bet a lot of people here have either never heard of or would prefer not to discuss.
the thread as i understand it isn't about what is "good music and bad music", but why people act like anything that's not in their collection is shite and always feel the need to tell others it's shite!? maybe take time to think that that person listening to a peppy boy band or cheesy one hit wonder might need something fun to listen to.

unless the question is asked "What do you think about such artist", if i don't like them i usually don't post or pay much attetion. now if that question is asked, well then have at it. lol. i feel fortunate that i grew up with everyone in a household that had different musical tastes, worked in music stores for years, sang, played instruments, experienced all types of music in my life that i don't care what anyone thinks. if you don't like it fine. feel happy that you didn't contribute in supporting it. whatever. there's an entire universe of music out there. explore it.

and don't assume that because someone likes or posts about an artist a lot or one type of music that they don't know about much else.

hug awesome thread. And I agree.

I used to be guilty of doing this myself here and I finally grew up. I may not get why someone like this or that artist but I am not going to call someone stupid or other negative connotation for liking an artist I don't like.
