I think of it as pin-up mopesterism - the sadness feels more like a pose than coming out of any real emotional place.

No way, IMO. I think they are very sincere with their music.
Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

you know, i tried to get into Massive Attack after hearing similar raves for years and was SEVERELY underwhelmed. i'm AFRAID to give Radiohead a listen for that reason. i was told about Massive Attack that you had to BE there (meaning in London in the 90s to witness their "ascent") I'm good for now on Radiohead maybe i'll find out what i've been missing years L8r but i won't bet on it, just like i've yet to buy a Beatles' album.

Not my cup of tea either. I really don't like them, and some of their fans are too pretentious for words!

I know what you mean, but when I listen to Safe from Harm, Angel or Teardrop, I can understand why they were so rapturously received ..but I still don't get what's so great about Paranoid Android... neutral

There's nothing wrong, they're depressing. Sometimes the English can capture Melancholy like they own it. Pink Floyd did it really well too. These guys have their moments that I like but it because there's 47 guitarists in the band...

You know what. I like radiohead. I love KidA.

But Pink Floyd is in a class so far beyond radiohead it's not even funny. Pink Floyd is brilliant, while radiohead is clever, IMO. boxed

Dan, it wasn't a comparison in music, it was the way these brits can capture melancholy with their music. Radiohead has mastered capturing a mood and it's depressing, that's what all music does, reflect people's emotions. I think the Floyd line is from Time, off of Darkside; "quiet desperation is the English way"

I don't want to be in a depressing mood, which is one of the reasons why I don't listen to radiohead. For people who yearn to be depressed, more power to you. I'ma stay on the one though.

Their B-sides are often better than their album work . . . almost like they do it on purpose.

Hey! Leave me out of it.
wink

I think 'the mood' is brought up every time non-fans describe Radiohead's music as 'depressing' or 'moody'.

None of that for me; to me it's beauty, happiness and sure, some times it's blue but most artists have different moods. Just to dismiss them onto one particular mood is a bit too easy, but a logical action if you don't 'get' or like their music.

I don't mind people not liking Radiohead (or The Beatles, for that matter), I say "Hurray for diversity!"
