Air Supply celebrate 35th Anniversary with new album "Mumbo Jumbo"

Just got a listen to two new tracks from their new record entitled "Mumbo Jumbo" one track is called "Hold On" and the other is "Dance with me" the latter turns into a full band jam at the end. This will be Air Supply's first all new album of Material since 2003's indie (their own label "nice pair") release "Across the concrete Sky" after that Air Supply went on a 30th Anniversary Tour, recorded two acoustic records, then each member had a solo record and then Graham Russell (not the lead singer) put up hhis own musical. This new record is currently going to be released in the USA on May4th through their label, Air Supply recently bought back their "Giant Records" releases upon that labels money issues, those albums included "News From Nowhere" "the Vanishing Race" and "The Earth is" from 1991-1995, Air Supply has not charted in America since 1995 when "Someone" peaked at Number 35 on the AC chart and its last Pop entry was 1993 when "GoodBye" peaked at number 86. Since then Air Supply has always been in business, they have recorded 20 albums to date, sold close to 50 million worldwide, and have maintained a much loyal following in all asian markets and latin american markets, which are proving to be most loyal.

I like their old stuff, like up to 1983, they are a guilty pleasure. "Making love out of nothing at all" is probably the greatest song ever written.

Nah i think Manilow created it, honestly Sinatra,Cole,Mathis were all "pop stars" how funny the times are, Johnny Mathis is pop one decade now ladyGaGa is pop?

But i get what your saying, but i love Air Supply and it aint no guilty pleasure, they can freaking do some great work, and the last few albums have been pure start to finish perfect records

Air Supply were always a talent duo. It's great to know that some members of the old-school can still make that money with OR without help from the major labels.

With that said, 1980-82 were the transitional period for FM Top 40 radio. Disco was "dead", dance-pop wasn't "born" yet, & The Funk was slow in replacing the horn sections with synthesizers. And I look at Air Supply, Christopher Cross, Anne Murray (remember her?!?), Juice Newton, and all of those kinds of soft-pop acts that made it biggest by taking advantage of the situation. disbelief

Thank goodness that Michael Jackson & Prince was success with the Thriller album & 1999 album respectfully. Or otherwise Christohper Cross would have been The King Of Pop AND Air Supply would have owned the 1980's along with him.

Just saying.
lol

Well i think there is always going to be the ballad, though Air Supplys "chart owning" run was from 80-83, which 7 straight top 5's and then having the mega "Making Love" hit at Number 2, lets also not forget that they OWN two songs that have been covered so much, "The Power Of Love" and "Without You" and when i say OWN i mean, not rights, they own the top performances of both clearly blowing everyone away.

I think what is kind of sad (though they are huge in Asian and Latin Markets, which are big as we know) is that once again talented duo's and people forget that werent a group they were a duo, but they are severly underrated as writers and composers and i know people think John Oates is the best sidekick ever, sorry i love you John, but Graham Russell of Air Supply cannot be touched vocally (and he isnt the lead voice) and his writing has only gotten better.

I also think that even though the artists u mentioned were not "chart stars" after that with ballads though kept recording, the ballad didnt die, i mean Chicago and Heart made second careers out of it, and all the hair metal bands like Slaughter and Winger and Warrant got their 1 or 2 hits from it.

LOL While I see the humor in your post, I think a lot of the adult contemporary was just spill over from the 70's in general. Music went through a big change in the 70's. Disco was only the last 3-4 years of the decade. There was a lot of that type of adult contemporary music all through the 70's, like The Carpenters, Captain and Tennille (love them), Robbie Dupree, ....tons of bands/groups.

However, I do agree that Air Supply and Manilow had the staying power into the 80's and beyond. There's something to be said for that kind of longevity in the business.

I think it should be applauded to keep doing what you love and not look at numbers, though Manilow has no issue with selling in this country, both can still sell out concerts everywhere for the most part. With Manilow i wish he would leave the covers, and im hearing he is finalizing his new record which is nothing but new music with alot of edge (im hearing for him), because for me his last "new record" of his material "here at the mayflower" had some gems on it. and these two new Air SUpply tracks i got (to get the advances just go to AirSupplyMusic.com and join up its free to get the downloads) it really is a treat to see bands and artists doing what they want!

And just a side note all the INDIE PREACHERS on this forum, walk the talk, the following are all indie and releasing new music

Captain & Tennille are good people. They even used a minimoog synth!

We had a thread about The Carpenters in 2009. Richard Carpenter was and still is one of the masters of the electric pianos. cool

Got a couple of their mid 80s albums (Bernie Edwards of all people produced most of their bomb 1986 album "Hearts in Motion" album).

Russell Hitchcock does indeed have a great voice. Sorta reminds me of Jon Anderson at times. Elfish LOL. His solo album is probably one of my all time fav albums. Love it.

Very, very 80's, and it does start off with 3 famous covers, which is quite odd, and whilst the covers are OK, the rest of the album, to me, is great!

Adult contemporary doesn't get much better then this song...

Intelligent, catchy, great production (Ok I do love how 80's it is LOL), and of course, a great voice. Written by a great 80's songwriters team: Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who wrote a bunch of great tunes in the 80's ("True colours probably being the most famous).

Yeah "the Earth is" was a very odd record, covers, and the artwork, im trying to remember my cd now if they are even pictured it almost looked like they were not even part of the record from the artwork. The "Hearts in Motion" record was interesting for the work with Bernard Edwards, most people dont even recall that, and forget that Air Supply does actually do something more than ballads, ironically this album got them released, well the deal was up with no renewal.

I don't own "the earth is..." LOL. The solo track I posted was from Russell's slept on solo album from 1987. For some reason the uploader put on the completely wrong artwork. Very misleading. I only own "hearts in motion" and their 1985 s/t album. Wouldn't mind buying "the earth is" or "the vainishing race", but havn't got around to it yet... The solo track I posted, "make it feel like home again", is a great track I think though.

Oh yeah i know i was just thinking back when i saw the "Earth Is" artwork, i have the cd somewhere, its now long out of print along with a few others of their albums, also "Hearts in Motion", The Earth is was a strange record, mainly because they hadnt recorded a new album since "Hearts in Motion" out came this album with no photo of them at all, had their names not been on the back as producers i think people would have thought it was a new group, but it was 1991 so i think they were trying to not be seen as much here.

Yeah I dont have that album. AOR was on its knees by 1991. Chicago "21" bombed that year for some reason, and AOR and hair metal got the boot at around the same time really. So maybe the guys knew this and decided for a low key approach to the album cover work? Anyway I still play Russell's album alot.

Its a good record Russell's and i think with Grunge and all that, Air Supply kind of already felt kicked out of america since they hadnt had an album in almost 5 years there. But hey, look at who is still recording and who isnt, as one member of Inxs once said to Michael Huthchence, "why do you want us to go grunge, its a fad, we never followed anyone before, why start now" very true.

Men at work's album was US number one for 15 weeks in 1982! Yep, the industry back then was in a recession of sorts before Jacko, Prince and MTV blowing up etc..still, look at the popular charts now. Its a zillion times worse.

I have an article from 1982 weeks after Thriller was released. Beat It and Billie Jean were being added to radio playlist and the reactions from the DJs and listeners...

You needed me.....you needed me....

Hell, what I needed was for my mother to change the station in the car. lol

You? I needed my mother OR grandmother the change the damn cable TV channel! lol I remember certain networks like TBS & CBN used to advertise Anne Murray albums.

Like I told Bboy84, 80-82 was a harsh transitional period for pop culture.

That's when I made the switch to R&B radio. After going through a great period like disco, I wasn't about to settle for adult contemporary and was needing something similar to what I was accustomed to. Hell, even a few country songs were starting to appear on pop radio too. lol
Andy is a four letter word.
