I just heard the album - loved the first complete run through and i`m doing the fourth now. For me this is highly addictive music. Compared to her last cd i would say it`s a little happier, the grooves and the sounds are brighter and not as dark as on 4th World war. It`s actually hard the first time to get through the album - you`ll want to go back and hear that beat again. Well - i am like that. If you liked Erykah Badu before, you`ll have a whole lot of fun to do whatever it is you need to do with this album, and i think the people who have`t liked an entire album or haven`t listened to an entire album by her wil be simply amazed because this record has an incredible flow and continously there`s....it`s that heat. Passionate, full of love, funky and very creative. There were some songs that made me say "i`ve never even heard anything similiar to this music". Simply the flow of the album, song to song start til end, that reminds me of how records like Parade, Kind of blue, The Love movement, Permanent shade of blue, or Are you experienced? have a certain kind of flow to them.
For me this is her best record so far, i see this as a landmark release.

Visit a Barnes & Nobles or Borders books location. I believe either one of them should have EQ magazine.

I just saw it, OMG eek the ending is the nail on the coffin. I don't even mind that it reminds me of Alanis Morrisette. The fact that those women get out of their comfort zone to get their point across is admirable to me.

And anyway, I can totally tell that she's testing folks with this new video.

The video makes complete sense. She strips her clothes as a way to break out of conformity with how the world sees her and as it progresses she feels completely free. In my opinion the shooting signifies that even though breaks out of the norm, she always gets shot down for being who she is.

dang...badu is & always will be my muse. i must follow. no choice. speechless after finally seeing...

in dallas, where JFK assassinated...character assassination...groupthink...respect for the individual... wow ... shot guerilla style, on the SPOT... no actors...she really stripped down in public!

i feel so lucky to know her as an artist ...

2 days!

she's an artist of the future. making videos like they used to back in the day with a story ... a meaning ... back to Madonna, Metallica, Petty, MJ, JJ, Eurythmics days ... but shot for youtube...

incredible

Erykah's nudity doesn't seem pointless or sexual IMO. As a matter of fact, its quite symbolic.
It could easily represent a journey through life - where she reveals more and more or herself or peels away her layers. You see the word "evolving" on her back at one point. The further she goes on her journey, the more she reveals of herself. Knowledge of self can also be intrepeted as knowledge of truth. The clothes represent the veils that people wrap themselves in during the course of life in general. To be in an evolved state, in a sense, would be like being like Adam and Eve. Not having shame or inhibition or fear of truth could be interpreted as being in an evolved state - having outgrown the social constrictions. She collapses in her video - which could symbolize death, which also symbolizes change - the conversion of the body back into matter. Changing after she has shed the social constrictions in life (represented by the clothes) and having evolved into a better being could be interpreted as her point. At lest, that's one way of looking at it (IMO).

Deebee said:
I like this interpretation a lot - especially the idea of evolving through life being less about accumulating knowledge, and more about peeling back the layers, and being able to stand naked without fear.

I also thought, as well as her own personal 'journey', it's a comment on the nation's political journey - i.e. the seeming progress of electing a Black president that's been recently undercut by the vitriolic opposition to healthcare reform, and the Obama presidency in general, and the political and media 'assassination' of him over that. That, for me, is what makes the reference to JFK (and her hometown of Dallas) at the beginning, and the assassination scene at the end, a little unsettling, because it's playing-out a lingering nightmare scenario that's there just below the surface.

It takes only 17 muscles to smile and over 100 to organise a march.

The video is beautifully done in terms of both artistic expression and social commentary IMO...Bravo Erykah! I must have this album!

Why couldn't I look like that after having kids? bawl
