If I read right, they only have barely 2 years left "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

If I read right, they only have barely 2 years left Agree. From what I understand MJ could have owned his masters earlier if he had released more albums. A delay in each album pushed back the time when the ownership of the masters would be transferred. I guess now the masters will be transferred to the MJ estate in late 2011. Of course, you can be guaranteed that Sony will release a new album and possibly expanded editions of past albums prior to that hand over to maximise their return. I saw a write up awhile back, just surfing the net, and it was around the time he was in London, announcing his "This Is It" tour, he tried to look Paul up. I don't know how true that is.

No new Michael Jackson material until 2012? Sean Michaels guardian.co.uk, Thursday 16 July 2009 10.16 BST Contractual obligations may prevent the King of Pop's 150 unreleased songs from being issued for another two years Forget the rush to issue unreleased Michael Jackson material – according to a report this week, we may not hear any new songs until 2012. According to BusinessWeek, Jackson was locked into a contract with Sony Music until the end of 2011. Though the singer completed his obligations to the label with the release of 2001's Invincible album, any music released before 2012 would still allegedly be owned by Sony. In 2012, however, the master recordings of Jackson's entire Sony catalogue will revert to his estate. After Jackson's death, the music industry is in a rush to get its hands on a reported 150 unreleased songs. Sony is particularly keen, seeing as it appears to own the rights at present. But this contract may be the thing that delays posthumous Jackson releases, as the singer's executors try to maximize profits from the unreleased catalogue. Jackson's longtime lawyer, John Branca, is one of the two "special administrators" of the King of Pop's estate. An old hand of the music industry, Branca is expected to try to postpone any Jackson releases until the expiry of the Sony contract, so that he can engineer a bidding war among labels. Jackson's estate could also issue the music on their own independent imprint. There would be many release options, particularly given the rumoured variety of Jackson's projects. Besides a comeback pop album with Will.I.Am and an unfinished classical album, there are reportedly songs from Jackson's Motown days in the early 70s. If Sony does not release this music, Universal (which owns Motown) would certainly be interested. The same is true for Warner, which administers the publishing rights to most of Jackson's songs. The winning label in a bidding war would reap huge rewards. In the United States, 1.1m Michael Jackson albums were sold last week. "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. Jackson’s Executor, Sony Discuss Use of 100 Unreleased Songs
Share | Email | Print | A A A By Brett Pulley July 23 (Bloomberg) -- Michael Jackson’s executors are in talks with Sony Corp. to determine the ownership of about 100 unreleased songs and how they can be marketed. The tracks are leftovers from the albums Jackson recorded for Sony, according to Rob Wiesenthal, chief financial officer of the Tokyo-based company’s U.S. operations. Most are owned by the late singer’s estate or Sony, he said. “It will get worked out,” Wiesenthal said yesterday in an interview at a media conference in Pasadena, California, sponsored by Fortune magazine. “It will take time.” Wiesenthal said he met yesterday with John McClain, a former music executive and friend and manager of the late singer, who died on June 25 in Los Angeles. McClain, the former head of urban music at DreamWorks, was named co-executor of the singer’s estate. The other, John Branca, was Jackson’s lawyer for much of the artist’s solo career. Most of Jackson’s top-selling albums, such as “Off the Wall,” and “Thriller,” were recorded during his years with Epic, a Sony label. The master recordings, which encompass everything recorded while making the albums, are controlled by Sony, Wiesenthal said. Full ownership of the masters will eventually revert to Jackson’s estate, he said. McClain declined to comment, according to spokesman Jim Bates of Sitrick & Co. When Jackson recorded the 2001 release “Invincible,” he and Sony spent more $35 million to create tracks, Wiesenthal said. The majority didn’t make it onto the album, he said. There are also many unreleased tracks from other albums. Sorting Through Songs The focus is on sorting through everything the artist has recorded and figuring out who has an ownership interest in each recording. Some producers, for example, may claim that they have a stake in the tracks, Wiesenthal said. Since Jackson’s death, there have been inquiries from companies interested in purchasing the singer’s stake in Sony/ATV, the music publishing company jointly owned with Sony, Wiesenthal said. “They’re inquiring,” Wiesenthal said. “But it’s not for sale.” Branca, in an e-mail this week, said the estate’s stake in Sony/ATV, which owns Beatles and Bob Dylan songs, “is not for sale.” According to Wiesenthal, the executors must first assess tax liabilities before they can consider selling any assets. Sony’s U.S. traded shares gained 50 cents to $25.20 at 1:35 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They had advanced 13 percent this year before today. He looked better in his bright red rehearsal pants and Ed Hardy clothes then those ugly over-done tacky outfits. Ick. Who picked him to team up with his traditional designers? Was that Michael's choice? Really? At least old school designers from the 80s and 90s could make MJ look iconic. This new stuff was too over the top IMO. MJ Fan 1992-Forever
