IMO he's in the the top 5 or so for sure. shrug I've just never understood what was supposed to be so great about him as a guitarist, a songwriter, or a singer. I admit I don't know much about him, other than I simply am not drawn to his songs or his guitar playing but he is heavily praised by the media and other artists.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

eek

Harsh!

but

SO true.

There have been many, many blues-y rock guitarists over the years - why did Clapton get singled out for praise for his directionless, uninspired cliched soloing?

The guy has a lot of technical talent, but his output is boring and bland.

I hate to bring race or nationality into it, but a part of me suspects he gets so much praise because he's a white Englishman playing in a bluesy style.

Yeah Duane Allman came up with the guitar line. In fact it's his solo that overtakes Clapton's.

I respect Clapton as a guitarist, but I don't often listen to his music. He's better guesting with other artists. He has a few classic tunes but honestly, his voice is kinda bland and his songwriting tends to be nothing special (with a few exceptions). Some of his biggest hits are covers.

To be honest though i have to say so is Jimi Hendrix and before peeps go nuts, it is true and you know it, the death made him greater, just like Kurt Cobain, im not taking away their talents, and JImi is great but many have come before and after him, he's great no doubt, but the "altar" like praise is somewhat overblown, and very overblown for Eric and totally overblown for Kurt Cobain. Terry Kath is someone that "died" that didnt get more famous for it, and have the LEGEND created, he honestly, is one of the best players ever.

Kurt Cobain was SOOOOO overrated. disbelief You either have to die in your 20s or live to be 79 (with some family trauma or drug addiction) before folk crown you "bestus".

Well thats the thing, i mean when these Guitar polls come out i see the same things all the time, i mean i see Kurt Cobain over Carlos Santana??? Excuse me?? I understand the whole Jimi thing and yes for his time and what he was up against yes he still is an amazing player and deserves the praise, but, take someone like Terry Kath from Chicago, this guy was better than Hendrix, and Hendrix marvelled at this guy, not taking away from Jimi its just where is this talk for Terry. And there are so many others, i mean on the Guitar lists where is Tommy Shaw, Richie Sambora, the problem is that there is so many "stigmas" attatched to those artists (shaw and sambora) and the bands they are in that No props are given to them, has anyone seen either play, i rank Sambora and Shaw easily top20 and cobain as a player isnt even in my top 100, not denying his talent its just lets be real

You aint lyin clapping Sambora, Santana and Shaw easily outplay Cobain and yes Hendrix too. Sometimes I think Santana could give Prince a run for his money (blasphemey to some).
I used to think Hendrix was this guitar god but the more I learned about other artists I began to realize how much hype there is surrounding him. Seems skill plays little factor when ranking musicians.

Yeah i think what always happens just like with Award shows, when these lists are done Everyone forgets there are other guitar players out there, i mean when i hear that Rolling Stone has come out with their Top Guitarists list, i already know what im gonna get, Jimi,Kurt,Jack White,Eddie VanHalen. And another crime is when this comes out where the hell is Brian May of Queen, the last poll had him down in the 40's????WHAT!! And what about Nuno of Extreme, i mean seriously, even if you HATED extreme ( i didnt) Nuno was on of the best i had ever heard, his technique and writing and chord changes, holy shit.

Rolling Stone hates Queen. They worship Kurt Cobain. Elvis. John Lennon. Please ignore all their polls, lists, and "expert" opinions. Greatest singers, guitarists, artists, albums, songs... the lists are painfully identical. John Lennon manages to be simultaneously be in the top 10 greatest signers, artists, and own half the top 10 albums list. Kurt Cobain is a better singer than Freddy Mercury, a better guitarist than Brian May, and has made 3 albums better than any Queen album. Thats Rolling Stoen for ya!

HOLY SHIT!! ANOTHER TERRY KATH FAN!?

You make me happy, and yes, you're right. Jimi I believe actually called Terry Kath his favourite guitarist in an interview, and he was legendary. He held Chicago together. After his demise, they became everything everybody hates about Chicago. Amazing guitarist. I might consider giving him the award for most Underrated.

Now, most overrated? That title absolutely goes to Bono. If they quit in 1989, maybe not, but I can't stand U2 anymore. I get it. You like reverb and passionate stadium rock. Move on.

Eric Clapton MIGHT be overrated, but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve high-levels of praise. And I'm not talking about the shit he's released since Unplugged. He's been coasting, and as many have said, he's a musician, not an artist these days. Just like BB King. They interpret standbys and rely on formulas that appeal to a certain demographic, and they do it extremely well....

But, also like BB King, Eric's legacy is very significant and substantial. His work with Cream alone should merit him respect among all who appreciate music. His blues contributions in the 70s were very important, his solo work was good, and his guitar is one of the most consistent in the business. If you don't get him, that's fine, don't like his sound, cool, but he does deserve a spot in the rock pantheon of important artists.

Some have mentioned Kurt Cobain here, and I cringe whenever he shows up on a "Best Guitarists" list, but that being said, I think In Utero, Nevermind, and Unplugged are all decadent. If any one of those three albums were missing from their collection, they would not deserve to be remembered, but combined I think they cemented their legitimate status as artists, performers and musicians that deserve respect.

And as for the Elvis pic, GTFO.

You're out of your mind...

He's obviously not the best songwriter in the world, his biggest classics are covers of well-know/unknown rock/blues songs (but ironically those covers are USUALLY better than the originals: Cocaine... anyone?) but still he has written some bigger-than-life classics from time to time (Sunshine of your Love, Wonderful Tonight, Tears in Heaven, My Father's Eyes, etc.). In addition, he has a deep, beautiful voice that's even better than many other rock singers...and the guy has one hell of a biography...

On top of that, he's OBVIOUSLY one of the Top3 classic guitar players of all time (Hendrix, Richards and Clapton), at least in my eyes...
His solos are legendary and he can play blues, hard-rock, pop, reagge, or whatever.

So, your line 'Eric Clapton is the most overrated rock artist of all time' is as stupid as, let's say, "Prince was the most overrated artist of the 80s" (...)

Stop jerking off and listen some good shit like the Cream records, Layla and other assorted love songs, Ocean Boulevard, Slowhand, Just One Night, Journeyman, MTV Unplugged, Riding with the King, etc.

I see clapton as god because at a tme of HEAVy segregation in the states, he , coming from England, was easily able to put that aside and take what was great about those artist and brng it to the next levle because he didn;t have Mr. Jim Crow, keeping him in his place. He brought black music where it should have been had it not been for segregation and negative stereotypes of the african american. And NEVER ONCE did he deny his influences and insperations. The world need bless him for that.
