Didn't see Switch on any on those DVD's, either. Too bad. Would have really liked to have seen that show! mad

They're missing alot of great artists and bands from the late 70s (Switch,Rose Royce,Raydio,Natalie Cole,Brothers Johnson, etc).Hopefully, there will be future sets that concentrate more on that particular era.

You don't see the legends on TV or hear them on the radio anymore? What? eek When it comes to black artists, the legends are the only ones you see and hear. Aretha Franklin, Al Green, The O'Jays, etc. have been on countless awards shows and television appearances throughout the years on up to the present. You can also turn on the radio and hear them daily.

How many times have you seen artists like The Barkays, Lakeside, Cameo, Skyy, Con Funk Shun, The Gap Band, The Dazz Band, Brick, Rick James, etc. on television since their heyday? Practically never because most music shows and awards shows are geared towards white people and they are only going to bring on huge highly successful black artists (usually crossover ones) that white people are aware of. Even the black awards shows have become the same way because mainstream black music has been almost completely crossover since the shit hop era so the black legends are the only ones a lot of the younger black generation are aware of unless it is a lesser known artist that was sampled in a shit hop song. If a show like "Soul Train" (a black show) isn't going to feature the lesser known black artists that weren't either huge legends or crossover stars, then who will? As I read the list of names on those DVDs, a lot of them could have been included on an "American Bandstand" DVD collection.

-----
I don't know where the fuck you live but as the baby boom generation moves into
Senior Citizen land you are not going to see acts from the late 60s and 70s on T.V or the hear them on the radio.

So Time Life did the right thing putting those acts on the disc. The masses don't care about CAMEO>

I have no problem with having the "legendary" artists on these discs, but I see Vainandy's point. There is no shortage of TV footage of Aretha,James Brown,Smokey Robinson.Marvin Gaye and the others.Their careers and performances are well-documented and frequently discussed/analyzed.However,it's harder to find footage of artists like Brick,Brass Construction,GQ,Heatwave,Cameo,Brothers Johnson, etc,so it would have been if those artists had been included on this set. We'll just have to wait for the next set of Soul Train DVDs.

The masses don't care about CAMEO

Cameo is well-respected and worshipped in the funk/R&B world.Where have you been? confuse You say that "the masses" don't care about them, but I would think that a Soul Train set is geared more towards fans of Old School R&B music and funk.

Glancing at at that MJ set posted above,I've noticed an interesting trend with many of the Soul Train artists...

Alot of artists performed on Soul Train during their 'early years',but once they hit the big time, they stopped appearing on the show lol Two examples:

*Donna Summer made a couple of appearances in 1976 (performing "Love To Love You Baby" and "Could It Be Magic" in one episode, and "Spring Affair" and "Winter Melody" in another episode).During her late 70s disco heyday, when she was riding hgh with songs like "Last Dance" and "Bad Girls",she was nowhere to be found on Soul Train, lol.

*Michael Jackson made numerous appearances on Soul Train in the early to mid 70s (with and without his brothers). However, during the 'Off The Wall' and 'Thriller' eras (when we was becoming the biggest artist on the planet),he was nowhere to be found on Soul Train.

It's like "Thanks,Soul Train,for supporting me when I was a nobody,but I don't need you anymore!" lol

Notably, these two artists came back to Soul Train but only after their heyday was long over.Donna Summer appeared on ST in 1984 (when her career was in decline) and MJ appeared on a ST TV special in the mid-90s.

Yes, I see live footage of vintage RnB acts all the time on T.V. WTF are you talking about!!!

"fans of Old School R&B music and funk.quote]

My guess is not enough to warrent putting those groups on the set with lip-synched performances.
----
" Brick,Brass Construction,GQ,Heatwave,Cameo,Brothers Johnson"

These groups simply did not have enough music out to have the sort of popularity to be included on the set even for RnB fans. In addtion, all of the performance would have been lipsynched and who really cares about that.

Bring on the live music.

You're so clueless lol Apparently, you don't realize that MANY artists and bands lip-synced on Soul Train after 1975 or so.The 'live' performances only occured in the early 70s and for only a few years.Think I'm lying? Scroll to the previous page of this thread where I posted a video of Johnnie Taylor singing "Disco Lady" on Soul Train in 1976.He doesn't even have a microphone! lol If anyone buys this set expecting to see all live performances, they're wasting their money, lol.

Ehhhh that is an unfair and unbalanced assesment ( i can only vouch for MJ on this) after about 1979 - when he was slowly getting away from the family and joes grip, mike declined tv performances. which he never particularly enjoyed anyway. Now that he was grown enough and had a choice, plus music videos, he saw rarely the point of "live tv" performances.

thats why in the 80s during his peak, you can count his tv performances on one hand. it was a rare occurance, which was smart on his part.

so it wasnt just about soul train. it was tv in general.

its not like he did 20 solid gold/ american bandstand performances instead ( he NEVER did solid gold i dont think)

Michael stopped doing TV shows altogether lol

But he did appear and perform on the Soul Train awards and specials in the 80s and 90s

During the VH1 special, Don and others talked about the live performances were rare and because it was very expensive to fund, so people lipsynched.

And the lipsynched performances were good also, because the music was great biggrin

And what's that about those groups didn't have that music out? Some of those groups mentioned had great back catalogs

That is the reason people will buy the disc to see the rare groups and live performances from the 70's the stuff you are never going to see anywhere else.

You can go to VH1 soul and see the 80;s stuff.
