But there is a way to reach both audiences...The band I spoke of on the last post, Earth,Wind & Fire, did it on their last LP, 2006's "Illumination". True, none of it was produced by them, but it was still their funkiest, most up-tempo album in years. It garnered multiple award nominations...& yes, it included contributions from Will.I.Am, Big Boi from Outkast and Kelly Rowland of D.C. But EWF's signature sound is so strong, you can't get away from it. The sound was current and true to their sound at the same time. Some of my younger friends & ex's loved it... The ONLY reason why it wasn't more successful "sales-wise" was because their record label's CEO was too busy force-feeding his daughter to the masses....But that's another story. That is an example of what the Commodores could do when they get into the studio. It would be hard though since Lionel hasn't recorded with them since the early 80s...EWF really never stopped releasing good music... Couldn't be more right. DeLaSoul's The Grind Date falls under that category too. Don't laugh at my funk

Not the same though with J.D Nichols singing Lionel's parts and the bass wizardry of Ronald LaPread. I agree. I have never seen the Commodores because I don't care for JD singing Lionel's songs/parts. I guess if JD stays around, that means he'll have a one-song set. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I remember them doing a free concert at a park in Columbia,SC
in the early nineties and i knew they were Lioneless but then i saw it was just Clyde,J.D,and William i was like where are the rest of the guys. It was okay for a free show but you can never get used to J.D singing Lionel's parts. Don't laugh at my funk

They said the same thing 20 years ago.
Not holding my breath but we'll see. Hopefully Lionel will do it and not excuse himself to put out another "shit-pop guest star" CD.

Well, where's the reunion? I would think that,by now, they would have some summer dates all lined up.Has anyone heard any news? Lionel's latest crap album is already dead and forgotten. There's no reason why he can't join the guys for a reunion.

vainandy said: Everytime an old act makes a new album, all the tracks never get past midtempo and they always have those damn cheap sounding drum machines on the tracks. If they ain't going after the shit hop crowd, then they're going after the adult contemporary crowd. Hell, get back to jammin'.
I agree. That's why I said,in an earlier post, that I would rather see them compile a bunch of outtakes from the 70s and call that their "new album" I wanna hear a Commodores album that sounds like the Commodores,as opposed to a Commodores album that sounds like today's crap.

in lieu of a new sellout album. I kinda feel the same way.In 2002,the Brothers Johnson reunited, did a tour and released a 'live' DVD/CD combo. No new album. It worked out fine.

True, but I like this guy He's always been a "replacement" member in various R&B groups. Before he joined the Commodores,he was in Heatwave, filling in for the guy who was paralyzed (Johnny Wilder). If Lionel re-joins the band for a reunion,I wonder if J.D. will get pushed aside? That would be so unfair.

lastdecember said: Well the tour is one thing, but an album??? I worry about this only because it seems that more with RB artists re-grouping they always feel the need to bring in the "hip" help for the day. I mean when Styx reunited in 1996 toured and then recorded a new album in 1999 they didnt bring in Nsync to be on a track. Meaning we ALL know Lionel and where his last 2 albums have been going, and anyone who thinks he will not be executive producer, you have another thing coming, my worry is Machine Gun 2011 featuring Lil Wayne and Akon.
