The Indiana man convicted of assaulting R&B star Ashanti with tawdry text messages and cell phone pictures has been sentenced to two years at Rikers.

Devar Hurd sent nearly three dozen lurid, distressing messages to the singer and her mother, calling the posts "sex texting" and saying they were meant "for the ladies." The recipients considered them vile.

"Mr. Hurd, I realize you don't want to hear this, but it's obvious to me that you need to get help," Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber said as he handed down the maximum punishment for misdemeanor stalking and harassment on Thursday.

Ashanti's mother, Tina Douglas, personally told jurors she was "terrified" by the messages and feared for her daughter's safety.


Hurd, who has been diagnosed with delusional disorder, said he wanted to meet Ashanti after the two made eye contact at a 2003 concert in Chicago. He's been locked up at Rikers since his July arrest for flooding Douglas' cell phone with pornographic pictures apparently meant for Ashanti.

Farber begrudgingly handed down the harsh sentence, having preferred to put the 31-year-old Hurd on probation and require him to undergo treatment for mental illness. But the judge said Hurd's family recently moved to Illinois, and it wouldn't have been possible to work out a probation sentence with that state, according to the Daily News.

Lead prosecutor Carol Holderness argued that Hurd purposely frightened his victims and therefore deserved to be in a cell.

"Even if he believed that Ashanti was in love with him, his conduct was not that of a man wooing a woman," Holderness said. "It's not like he was sending her flowers."

Why, they were for the ladies, of course.

So says the Windy City wacko who's on trial for swamping Ashanti's mom with revolting messages and images he hoped would romance the R&B singer.

"That's sex texting, for the ladies," Devar Hurd explained. "She welcomed it."

The 31-year-old man took the stand Friday in Manhattan Supreme Court, where he is on trial for swamping the Long Island star's manager-mom, Tina Douglas, with lurid calls and texts.

Alternately describing himself as a music company executive, a singer, a car salesman, a model and a real estate investor, Hurd calmly explained to jurors that many of his "lady friends" welcomed the images of him pleasuring himself.

"I have this lady friend in L.A., and she likes this kind of stuff," he said.

Douglas, he insisted, was no different because she never demanded that he knock it off and only once swore at him.

"This is the thing, she welcomed the messages," he said. "She never tell me to stop, see?"

Hurd frequently peppered his testimony with "yada, yada, yada," and at one point rapped a few lines from the Snoop Dogg hit "Drop It Like It's Hot" while trying to explain a picture he sent Douglas of Ashanti squatting in hot pants.

"She has on these little shorts," Hurd said. "This is for the fellas."

The hip-hop hustler explained how a fleeting encounter with Ashanti at a 2003 Chicago concert convinced him they had a "connection."

"We had strong eye contact, and I'm like, 'Oh, I need to get in contact with her,'" he said.

Hurd's pursuit of stardom then led him to sing into an answering machine for Irv Gotti, until a member of the music honcho's posse leaked him a number for Douglas.

"I was like, 'Hey, wazzup, Tina?'" Hurd said.

The singer's mom rarely resisted his calls, Hurd said. Asked if Douglas "liked" him, Hurd didn't hesitate.

"Yep," he said.

Hurd said he also sent pictures of naked women to Ashanti's dad, Kincaid, but drew the line at sending him pictures of his own genitalia.

"He don't want that," said Hurd, who faces up to two years in prison if convicted of aggravated harassment. "That's for the ladies."

With a face like that (clear skin and nicely manicured facial hair), a name like Devar (kinda like devaughn or shemar) and a booty....it aint gonna be nothin' nice in prison for this man. I feel sorry for him....almost.

he should act very crazy, talk to himself and stare at the walls, and he should not bathe at all - just walk around foul and stank. That should buy him a good 6 months of personal safety.

Im sure he will have a show when he gets out, and we will feel bad for him or think he was a victim because Ashanti dressed too sexy
