I am so envious of you guys who saw Rick play live, I can only imagigine the energy. Music back then always seemed so much more organic and loose, I remember feeling that way when I first saw Prince play.

Rick was one of those artist that was fearless and didn't care how people felt about him. Just like Prince. But Rick was more vulgar and streetwise. In concert he gave u your money's worth. U knew U were going to have a good time at his shows. He would always bring a gigantic joint on stage and smoke it in front of everyone. The audience would go wild..
....
eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Yep,it was the third and final single. If I'm not mistaken,it was released late in 1981 (December,I think),which is one reason why it bombed as a single.By that point, everyone already had the album.I also think it was overshadowed by "Super Freak",which was such a massive hit.

I remember seeing the 45 for "Ghetto Life" in one of the stores. Same here about the radio though...R&B radio in my area played every single song from the album except "Pass The J". Back then, radio was good at playing non-single tracks. In those days, radio didn't play hits, they made hits.

I think "Call Me Up" could have been a single.

At that point, it was unnecessary for Motown to release another single. "Fire and Desire" was getting LOTS of spins. More than any other song from that album (on urban stations at least). Super Freak was still getting crazy spins on top 40 radio, so Motown had made their money.

"Ghetto Life" was the fuckin' dookie.

I remember at Rick's memorial service in LA I was sitting in the upper deck (where the press and all non-celebrity Rick heads like me were relegated to) when the Stone City Band came out and did their like 20 minute set this lady from CNN or USA Today or somewhere started dancing when they played "Superfreak" but then when they played "Ghetto Life" it just took all the dance right outta her...It was too much funk for her to process...I literally watched the "Ghetto Life" funk fry her circuits, I mean you could just see it happening all over her face...that segue to "Ghetto Life" just wilted her whole shit...and that's without Rick doing any vocals.

Still don't understand why Rick is never mentioned in the league of Prince or other funk masters. Its like he never existed. Rick was huge in 81 and had a lot of hit albums before that. His was a underrated balladeer to....

For all the reasons they put him in jail for some bullshit...making millions while being unapologetically ghetto the entire time and making a song directly calling out the police in no uncertain terms almost ten years before NWA. Oh, and lest I forget, for fucking too many fine ass white women.

Street Songs is a masterpiece and stands as one of Motown's crowning achievements after the conceptual masterpieces released by Marvin and Stevie. Rick's album put him on course with those legends. I just wished that Motown had been more confident in Rick tho.
