New Gil Scott-Heron CD!

The new album is entitled I'm New Here and it was released in stores and digitally today on February 9th. Let me tell you all, it is stunning. When I mean stunning, I mean STUNNING. I have to say that Gil Scott-Heron has finally arrived to the new century and his message is just as relevant as it was back in 1969. The production mixes the modern with the classic and it has a very adventurous edge to it. I just can't describe it but one must listen with a clear mind. 'Me & The Devil' and 'New York is Killing Me' ranks up there with Gil's best work.

Less then 30 minutes of music total. Great stuff - just not enough to make a real GSH album

I agree, but this is how I remember Gil. I wish it was longer, but I'm constantly putting the entire record on repeat so it doesn't matter.

30 minutes of this trumps hours of most drivel currently available.
Contemporary "rappers" specifically (and youngblood recording artists in general) should take a few lessons.

a) First and foremost, have something to say worth listening to.
b) Keep it short and sweet (just like the best Pop songwriters do).

The problem is, they're generally not that deep or disciplined.

...Running (another track off of the album)

Do yourself a favor and check out all the tracks for free on his website: http://gilscottheron.net/

Also read the article by Alexis Petridis. A couple of choice paragraphs...

Nowadays, no one is allowed to shuffle off this mortal coil without first being shoved out for a lap of honour that involves having their career at least temporarily resurrected. They're either teamed up with younger musicians who bear their influence in order to forensically recreate the sound of their glory days; encouraged to record an album stuffed with apparently anomalous contemporary cover versions; or matched with a hip producer to make an unexpectedly stripped-down acoustic album.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Perhaps the appetite for the latter-day career resurrection is indicative of the way the market for rock and pop music has changed in recent years. Once, it was strictly the province of the young who wanted their own music - why would they care what became of the faded star that time had passed by? - and weren't interested in the past and its stars. These days, the audience has altered; we live in an age when the middle-aged album buyer wields perhaps more influence than his kids, not least beccause he's more likely to actually buy some albums rather than steal them off the internet.

At the very least, New York Is Killing Me & I'm New Here should get a Grammy for something.

silverchild thanks for making me bring this to the top of my listening pile.

One of the most beautiful voices in.. well, whatever spectrum you want to place this man in; to me, he is impossible to place in one particular corner.

His message. His influence on so many different musical styles and artists. But what matters to me most; the combination of that voice and those words. Minister of Information to some, to me he is one of the best poets in the world, his words flow like no other MC I know, except maybe Q-Tip.

Most of the cats here know him, I'm sure. The peeps in the Prince: Music And More-forum know him cuz Prince borrowed Scott-Heron's most famous song title for one of his songs.

And he made a new record. First in ages. He's been gone too long. I am so, so glad he's back.

How is his health anyway? I know he has HIV and likes to do cocaine. I hope he has been able to stay clean now at his age!

The revolution will not be televised!

No will care about an Octomom or if Jon got back with Kate and their eight. The revolution will not be televised!

Nobody will stay up late to catch Tonight Shows to see Conan race Terri Hatcher, Jay wink at Kevin on the sax, see bad Headlines, or see a masturbarting bear. The revolution will not be televised!

Nobody will care who is, ain't, might be or should be the father on the Maury Show, or the next guest host on Monday Night Raw. The revolution will not be televised!

It won't matter how many times Tiger creeped out on his wife, how many times Senator Craig made a run to the restroom, or how many times Ted Huggard inhaled that crap while being impaled from the back. The revolution will not be televised!

Rush Limbaugh's latest rant will fall on deaf ears, Sarah Palin's high school diaploma will not come under investigation because America's attention will be on the revolution.

America will not in tune to no conservative blog talk radio programs because they will be too busy waiting on that "change". The revolution will not be televised!

The revolution will not be bootlegged, remixed, downloaded, tivo'd, youtubed, blogged, twittered or sold on on ITunes! The revolution will not be televised!
