A Singer's Old Age & Looks...Or Not? As a person who loves music, does it matter to you what the age a singer is and whether or not they look their age? Or, is it their music/voice that gets you to buy their songs and interested in them and not how they look or how old they are? Thoughts?
My response to my own question is, personally, it does not matter the age of the singer or how they look. It's music, so I'm more focused on what I'm hearing vs. what I'm seeing. And, most of the time, I'm listening to their music more so than visually seeing them as I'm listening. I listen to music in my car, at work, at home, while shopping, etc. The music itself is most important to me. Needless to say, a lot of young people (and some older people as well) are focused on a singer's looks regardless if the singer can sing that well or not. It is all a matter of opinion though. Between Donna Summer (61) and Britney Spears (28), who can sing? Well, they both can, but you know what I mean. To me, all that matters is the voice and loving the music along with the voice. You have to like the voice and the genre of music they are singing. If you can separate the genre of music you like from whether or not a singer can really sing or not, that's good because you would at least show that you know the difference between a good singer and being biased just because you may not like the style of music they are singing. To a record company, the looks may be just as important as the singer's voice, but as a music buyer, I say it's all about what I'm hearing vs. what I'm seeing. http://TheJourneyOfJimmie.Blogspot.com/ [Edited 2/13/10 18:30pm] [Edited 2/13/10 18:52pm]

I know the politically correct thing is to say it doesn't. But in reality, we all influenced about how an artist looks. The visual is a huge part of the music business especially live performing. Most artists recognize that because they do things to attract people visually, wearing certain types of outrageous costumes for example.
But the good thing for artists is everyone has different idea of what is attractive and what a person of a certain age should look like. But humanly I don't think it possible to completely ignore physical appearances.

As long as the music is decent it doesn't bother me. Alot of my favorite artists are not in my age range. I will say there maybe some artists I would be more attracted to than others but as long as the music is good it's fine.

I would love to say that it's about the music and the vocals and it is, but two things you have to remember
1. If you base your career on the fact that you're a sex symbol or the record company put that label on you, then yes, it really matters. 2. I think it's tougher for women who look "average" or they don't have a fit dancer's body, to break out, no matter how great they sound. Sad, but very true.
