Secondly, Jody was a good artist and we don't even need to discuss the undisputable talents of Mr. Cymone. Thirdly, WTF is this Jody vs. Janet shit? You can tell the younguns on here. Let me reassure you all that no one was having the "Jody is ripping off Janet" conversation in 86-87. NO ONE. This is some retrospectively viewing pulled-out-of-the-ass commentary. Jody was high fashion/classy. Janet was "hip". Jody was avant garde R&B and Janet was pop. If you could take this thread conversation back to 87, everbody would laugh at it. I wouldn't call what Jody was doing avant garde. Yes, she imitated Grace Jone's vocals but that doesn't dub her as avant garde. Plus her fashion was very Madonna. Janet was more than "hip" I'm just rambling now This thread should be locked Nobody would have been comparing Jody to Madonna in 1987. Like I said, this is some more retrospective comparison shit. When you review anything cultural without knowing the tone of the culture at the moment, you get threads like this. I was a kid back then. I know what was going on with the music and culture. I'm guessing you didn't. And Janet was hip but the music world didn't circle around her. When Still A Thrill came out, NOTHING on the radio at the time sounded like it. That makes it a bit avant-garde in my book. It was avant-garde R&B for the time period. People always try to twist stuff up AFTER THE FACT.

There was nothing like Janet's Control album out at the time reason why artists like Jody followed what she did with that album. No it's not avant-garde at all. You should look up the definition of avant-garde

R&B is bigger than Janet, bigger than Jody and had a broader span in 86-87 than just those two artists. If you actually did compare Jody to Madonna in 87, you know damn well you were in the minority. That wasn't even a topic of discussion back then. Most Madonna fans didn't give a damn about Jody Watley until she started doing more full-on dance music oriented material.

Sorry, Funkpill. Jody was the bomb back then and Still A thrill was a hot track. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Its a Jody thread, not a Jackson/Madonna thread. Some people are just obsessed. Miss Jody was supermodel cool.

They fucking up your thread smh That's why I'm redoing the thread. I'm sure that one won't get any responses because any *famous family* response and I'm already going to let it die lol It's like OK it's alright to mention them but when you do it just to debate/argue/rant on and on and on and on threads lose any sense of anything. The ORG is infamous for off-topic banter.

I'm not obsessed with Janet. Yes, I'm a fan but I'm not obsessed with her. Why are you turning this into a personal issue? Someone sounds imitated. I'm sure where this wasn't a discussion in your neighborhood or whatever but it was brought up by critics and music listeners.

I tried to say that im my first post...that if you were there back in the 80's you'd "get it". It is interesting that in hindsight how a young'un might come to these conclusions, but like what you said is a more articulate version of what I was trying to say.

Also, as the musicians will note, the sound of Still A Thrill vs. the Control album are two distinct EVOLUTIONS of the Minny sound.
Andre's/Jody is sparser, more guitar based with lots of "space". More "Prince like" Control is more layered, keyboards, "heavier" sound, More "Time Like".

That was my favorite period musically, growing up. It's all I ever really cared about in fact. It was an amazing time in pop. Blaque summed it up perfectly. * * *
