When Still A Thrill came out, NOTHING on the radio at the time sounded like it. That makes it a bit avant-garde in my book. It was avant-garde R&B for the time period.

You're obviously one of those Janet-obsessed fanboys. YOUR musical world circled around Janet. R&B is bigger than Janet, bigger than Jody and had a broader span in 86-87 than just those two artists. If you actually did compare Jody to Madonna in 87, you know damn well you were in the minority. That wasn't even a topic of discussion back then.
Most Madonna fans didn't give a damn about Jody Watley until she started doing more full-on dance music oriented material.

Andre's/Jody is sparser, more guitar based with lots of "space". More "Prince like"

Control is more layered, keyboards, "heavier" sound, More "Time Like".
