JazzTimes - March 2010

Great issue starting with the amazing cover photo of Dee Dee Bridgewater.
The Grammy/Tony award winning performer received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her portrayal of the Jazz legend in the stage production of Lady Day.

A few excerpts from the article where she discusses her career and latest release...

...Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love from Dee Dee (avail. March 2nd)

"I'm not trying to present Billie in that maudlin, sad and sorrowful way that everyone tends to look at her and her music," Bridgewater explains. "She had a really dry sense of humor, almost a British sense of humor. I wanted to present another side or another interpretation of her music."

Instead of Holiday, Bridgewater listened to lots of Nina Simone, Jimmy Scott, Gloria Lynne, Lorez Alexandria, Johnny Mathis, Harry Belafonte and Marge Dodson while growing up in Flint, Mich. Bridgewater also said she listened to a lot of trumpeters, because her father, Matthew Garrett, was a jazz trumpeter.

Another feature in this issue is an excerpt from...

...Princess Noire: The Tumultuous Reign of Nina Simone

I need to subscribe to that magazine ASAP nod

And I didn't know that Madame Nina Simone has a new book coming love Even though I own 3 of her books, I don't think they revealed much.

Quality magazine on Jazz.
The Nina Simone book looks like a good read.
