been to a couple of those... a couple of years back.
But the prices were insane!!! But nonetheless it's good fun to be / and look around in one of those places... and I buy cds to... last one I picked up was Sharleen Spiteri with Melody... and the Dead Weather one... I download to... It's all I can do right now... because.. My leg is broken now... because of the f%cking snow here in HOLLAND, and It's gonna take some some time before I see any record-store inside ) [Edited 2/11/10 3:43am]

At one point there were simply too many record stores around. It was a lot of fun from the enthusiast's point of view, but I think they drove each other out of the business as well. A lot of them could attract only a certain branch of customers and in bigger cities you'd usually have to travel quite far in order to get to those places as well. In the end, I just started myself downloading stuff as I couldn't be arsed to spend 3-4h just in order to get some new music.

I used to think this way - but have you noticed lately that CD packaging is basically zilch? Look at Prince's Planet Earth CD - no booklet, not even a tracklisting! Most CDs now come in those shitty slim-cardboard cases, as well. I still buy CDs of artists I love, and would not want to lose in HD crash... but if it's just a one-off single I like from a band, I'll download it. [Edited 2/11/10 12:01pm]

Yeah, I do. Haven´t bout anything in ages, but just because I wasn´t interested in anything that was released. Getting my Sade tomorrow (hopefully, if it gets delivered to our shop finally). We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I don't think anyone has brought it up (and since I don't download and my ears aren't that good anyway I don't know about this) but what's the deal on MP3s not being as good in sound quality as physical CDs and does anybody really care anymore?
Are we settling for a product of more convenience over less quality? What would it be like to listenhappens to be spinning a top quality CD? I also heard that music companies are now EQing their CDs to be listened to on portable music devices anyway. Any truth to that? I guess we can get used to anything.

Nah,that's not a problem CDs will be around for many years to come.Hell, vinyl is still around! Record companies understand that older people still prefer the CD format,so they're not gonna stop manufacturing CDs.

I will still purchase an actual physical CD if it happens to be something rare, usually an Import, and it absolutely needs to be digitally remastered (unless it's a new production). But even with my favorite CD's, I usually rip them to the library on my computer, in either MP3 at 320kbps format, or else Lossless (FLAC) format, because I upload a lot of music to various blogs and websites. And of course, once they're ripped and just sitting on my computer, might as well share them with the world via the various digital venues. Plus, I'm just flat running out of room for them, so I'm a lot more discriminative when it comes to adding yet more CD's to my collection. And like many have mentioned, I refuse to purchase "downloads" of songs, because the few times I have (through various artists websites), the variable bit rates on most of them were awful and sounded terrible.

I like the idea of owning something tangible...so I try to buy CDs unless it's a "one-hit-wonder" type of artist, then I'll just download 1 or 2 songs off of Amazon. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I went there on monday & I had a meltdown picked up quite a few used cd's that I had on vinyl as well as the new Sade. I now know whenever im in San Francisco that is were ill be headed. I download quite a lot as a tool for listening before I buy (if it aint up to scratch im not buying) I do buy a lot of reissues as nothing better than having that hard copy in your hand & those linear notes are a must have for me. Life has a way of making you live it. . . .

I saw on tv tonight a feature on record shops where they claimed there's only 300 left in the UK, for sure they ain't taking into account independent cd retailers but they've dropped like flies over the last decade in London to where now you've only now really got the trading music stores outside of the big chains.

I jumped on the iTunes Store download bandwagon when it opened about 6 years ago, but after downloading hundreds of songs, to date I have only purchased 2 entire albums.
The majority of them are one-offs, B-sides, or iTunes exclusives. I love buying CDs, even if the packaging is getting more and more basic. Physical CDs are actually cheaper than most of the iTunes albums anyway.
