Get 'em while you still can. In case you haven't noticed Tower and Virgin Megastores are gone and the CD section at the big multi entertainment stores like Borders, Hastings, Best Buy etc. have shrunk to about a fifth the size they were just 6 months ago.

Sign o' the times.

I for one am sick about it. I have racks and racks of them taking up all the extra wall space in my house.

It's not that I need to have the artwork and liner notes although I do like that, it's that I choose what to play by feeling a mood, walking to the section that contains the genre that matches the mood and then scanning through the titles until I come to one that hits me in the moment as being the right choice and then that's it.

I never know before the moment strikes what I'm going to choose and that's the magic of having the physical CDs for me.

Having a menu of titles in my computer does not work on the same level for me. I can tell many of my CDs just by the color of the edge facing the room without even having to read the letters. They're like old friends.

I'll be sorry to see the medium go but it will, just like the vinyl and cassette tapes did.

When I sit down to the computer, a lot of the times I can't think of what I want to play because you have to just think of a song out of the blue and type it in. When I thumb through my records or CDs and visually see the covers, it sparks my interest in what I want to play next.

You can virtually browse your album covers in iTunes, but it's not the same.

The thing I enjoy most is shopping for music. Nothing like browsing through a rack of lps or a cd case to find that tangible object.

I buy CDs now only if I can't download them from somewhere.

I mostly buy CDs but very rarely buy individual songs on Itunes or Amazon or even Napster. It's mostly stuff that is either hard to find on CD, not available on CD or a one hit wonder or something I would not think of buying. There are occassions where I'll buy a song and then buy the album, but it's kind of rare.

Though I've transitioned to listening to music entirely by digital means (my computer and DAPs), I still buy CDs out of loyalty toward my favorite artists and to support and encourage good music. Having a physical medium also affords a sort of connection to the artist that a download can't give me. When I buy music, I want a tangible product, not bits on my computer for my money.

As long as people are financially supporting the artists they love and listen to, then I don't care how people buy their music.

This, except for the vinyl part. I do download, but I don't ever ONLY download something, unless I hate the album, in which case, it gets deleted and I don't go purchase a physical copy.

I would really start a vinyl collection, though. Mainly records that were originally released on vinyl, though. And special records, because vinyl's a bit expensive.

Not really. Check 2nd hand stores in your area. There's always somewhere with a ton of albums for a few bucks each.

I bought 82 albums on CD last year, 92 the year before*.

I would always rather have a CD than a download. ANY time.

I use an iPod, and all albums go onto my iPod as soon as I buy them, so you may ask what the point of having the physical album is but...I just like them, collecting them, seeing my collection grow, knowing that if my iPod dies and my PC crashes they will still be there.

I like the artwork, reading the lyrics, seeing who played what, and so forth.

I feel cheated if I buy a download, because I don't have anything physically to show for my spend. Of course, I appreciate that the money has paid for the music, and quite rightly so, but to me it feels like I am getting less value, even if the download costs less than the CD.

(*The only reason it was less last year was just down to the law of averages of me finding less I wanted to buy, not because I am consciously cutting down for any specific reason.)
This is not an exit

Not as many as before but I still buy them, most of the time I download new music. I still enjoy reading the liner notes/lyrics from cd packaging.

The last 2 cds I purchased were Corinne Bailey Rae and Sade's new releases...but then I just rip them to my zune and store them away.

Yes, buy cd, immed rip at lossless to ipod...

I also have paid subs to Rhapsody, Sirius...

I use those to find albums I want to purchase.

I miss the experience of going to the record store and spending 3 hrs trying to narrow my purchase down to 5 cd's. the hope you will find that rare out of print or import ... the suggestions by the cool independ stores, the $20 Prince boots per cd...

At my peak....wasn't unusual for me to hit over ten stores every week. Most of the "collecting disease" (ha) was ABOUT what aalloca said.....the thrill of the hunt & copping cool shit if you were in the right place @ the right time.

NONSENSE

Only Prince & related CDs. I've wasted a lot of dough buying them. I used to buy everything. The problem with purchasing physical CDs is you never know when the format will become obsolete. Besides there's so much terrible music being released, it's hard to find the gems.

I know what you mean.I really miss the "experience" of shopping for new music.Going to Tower Records on a Tuesday when new releases arrive.Spending alot of time walking around, checking out imports,12" singles, and like you say, narrowing down my purchaes to 4 or 5 CDs.You don't get this same kind of excitement when you download something.

Oh I do too. The library in my county has book sales twice a year. The last day of the 4 day event is "Bag Day". Whatever you can shove into a bag, the bag is $2. I usually make off with about $20 (10 bags) of stuff. They only allow the plastic grocery bags, but if you pack it right, you can get a lot in there.

I work in a language school and I get deliveries of new books every week - who says you can't get paid for doing what you like? Even if it is only sniffing new copies of Straightforward Upper Intermediate smile

I buy those by independent artists and small labels. I don't feel obliged to support companies like SONY, BMG or whatever there remains these days.

I buy used vinyl records sometimes though.

I still do, but downloading (free and lossless razz ) means I'm more discerning in my choice and there's no longer the lure for retail impulse buys of albums I haven't listened to.

I have a 160g iPod which was a gift that I'm not overly fond of, I'll always be attached to vinyl and cd.

For me, it depends on the artist. For instance, I have always and will always buy MJ and Prince albums no matter what. Sade is another one whose albums I always buy. Everyone else, I'll need to hear a sample of the music or read reviews before deciding if I want to buy their album. As I said though, it depends on who the artist is for me and if I like their music enough to purchase their album.
"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

My son downloads; I still buy CDs--downloaded one album in MP3 format and then couldn't play the burned copy on my stereo CD player...so I'm back to buying CDs! I'm probably doing something wrong...what is it?! Don't have a clue! lol

was the disc a CD-RW(re-writable)? seems many stereos have problems playing them. you shouldn't have any problem with a standard CD-Recordable.
