Sade returns to #1 on the Billboard 200

This is a fantastic opening, and follows Lady Antebellum's 481k debut last week. Sales are down only 5% versus last year - album sales appear to be bottoming out as digital sales begin to make up for losses at physical formats.

SADE MAKES IT A HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY FOR BIZ
Jaheim, Josh Turner Also Set to Debut Next Week

February 10, 2010

Sade’s been away for a while, but her fans are still out there.

The reclusive pop-soul songstress returns with Soldier of Love, her first Epic album in 10 years, since 2000’s Lovers Rock, and sixth overall in a career that began in 1984 with Diamond Life.

According to one-day sales reports from those retailers not up to their necks in snow, the album will debut at #1 next week with a total somewhere between 400-425k, with bad weather back east and Valentine’s weekend shopping the two variables.

The week’s other top debut looks like Atlantic R&B crooner Jaheim, whose Another Round, the follow-up to 2007’s gold-certified The Makings of a Man, appears set to go over the 100k mark, and could do as well as 110k.

MCA Nashville country-rocker Josh Turner is angling for a strong, 60-65k debut for his latest effort, Haywire.

ForeFront Christian act tobyMac is on target for 40-50k, maybe more, with the religious market the big (pardon the pun) X factor.

RCA/RMG’s Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds collaboration, Live in Las Vegas, is on track for between 35-40k.

Big Machine’s soundtrack to the all-star movie Valentine’s Day opening this Friday, features a new Taylor Swift single and could be a wild card, with 20-25k forecasted, the same total expected for Sire’s Finland rockers HIM, whose aptly titled Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, Chapters 1-13, arrives just in time for that very special someone who likes some Scandanavian metal with their chocolates.

The market was up 3% vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and down 5% year to date. You may now return to watching an exciting curling match at this year’s Winter Olympics, where maybe perhaps they can import some snow across the border from Washington, DC.

Sade 400-425k
Jaheim 100-110k
Josh Turner 60-65k
tobyMac 40-50k
Dave Matthews/Tim Reyonlds 35-40k
Valentine's Day 20-25k
HIM 20-25k

That's Sade, she's a smooth operator. What do you want her to do start shredding a guitar, and jump and down doing the housequake?

love that bolded but. but that fits pretty much all Sade albums to a T, doesn't it? that and the line I quoted above from the Rolling Stone review encapsulates what's simultaneously awesome and tireseome about all Sade records, I think.

it's okay not to like her, you know? it's not right, but it's okay.

I ran to Tar-ge' at lunch yesteray and got it for 9 bucks and change. woot! Very pleased so far.

I'm loving In Another Time and The Moon and the Sky. Baby Father is really sweet, and of course I dig the title track very much. I think the whole album is well done and I'm looking forward to tour dates.

Thanks for posting the videos and upcoming appearances. The Lady is timeless and positively REGAL! I hope that the younglings with all their gimmicks are taking notes. wink

has anyone heard any chatter regarding a Sade/Maxwell tour? (M is on Columbia and S is on Epic, both of which are owned by Sony.) It would be the tour of the decade as far as I'm concerned.

The View performance is up.

Boy, I'm starting to wonder about some of the orgers taste. I'm not really that big of a fan of Sade, but Soldier Of Love is a great song. Could easily fit on Sign O The Times. Prince needs to cover this one. It's actually the direction I wish his music would go.

Sheffield is not always right but his comparison between Sade and AC/DC were spot on.

From the article:
And while the music industry has transformed in her absence in an era where so many artists rely on tools like social networking to build their fan base, Murray said Sade has the advantage of being one of a kind.

"There has never been a 'new Sade' or a younger version of Sade," Murray said. "She has established herself as a brand and as a desirable entity, no matter what the year or what her age."[/

He's right about that. There has never been a duplicate version of Sade, and there never will be. Love her style.

I listened to the CD all the way through today. There were around 5 songs that I liked immediately and the rest were pleasant enough.

I am thrilled with her being #1!!!! If I were a performer, I'd so want her career trajectory and I don't understand why these younger performers aren't looking to how she's maintained over the years. Like I said on another thread, Aaliyah was the only one I read about who said she wanted to patten her career after Sade's. To be able to wait so long in between CDs and then score without all the hoopla is just fantastic. I find Sade's continued success very encouraging, obviously!

Now the songs I remember liking off the bat are "Moon & Sky" "Soldier of Love" "Bring It Home" "In Another Time" and "Skin". I didn't care for "Babyfather" much. It may grow on me. And "Be That Easy" brought to mind two tired turtles making their way up a hill after a long day or something, especially with the whistling at the end. Kinda endearing but a little dull, too.

I though it was a nice album upon first listen and it's grown on me a little since then too. It's a nice, well-rounded pleasing listen, but it's nothing spectacular. I don't feel the need to skip any of the tracks and with plenty of time to just chill out and take it in as a complete body of work it does have a cool feel to it, but not even the title track is a real 'killer' track. The sales and reviews are definitely riding somewhat on past glories and sentiment rather than the strength of the work alone. Lots of people have been waiting for a new Sade album and they all want it desperately to be very good. I think it's just good.

Yeah, so far I'd say it's good. It's not spectacular, but good. "Love Deluxe" is still my fave CD from her, followed by "Stronger Than Pride" "Promise" and then "Lover's Rock".

Slightly off topic....What is the general Consensus regarding Sade's best album?

It seems based on a cursory reading here that Love Deluxe might prevail. However, I always felt/thought that Promise was the best album.

I am not sure which of the albums is more critically acclaimed or preferred, so For those who prefer Love Deluxe, in what ways is it a better album.....Is it that the songs are just more meaningful to you, or is it the sound, production style of the overall album that you prefer?

For me there's just something about Love Deluxe. It's just smooth and pure and soulful. From the cover design and on. The fact that it holds one of my all time Sade favorites--Cherish the Day--gives it a major boost. That guitar, the vocal blend, the quiet groove and even the video is just heaven for me. But then there's Kiss of Life and No Ordinary Love and on and on and the sweet Pearls. This album captures the serenity of Sade with some of the grooves that they can deliver as well. Stronger Than Pride album is also high on the scale for me.

When I got Lovers Rock it was a little to quiet for me but it soon grew on me and I can appreciate it for what it is. That's sorta where I'm at with this new one but not sure when or how it will grow on me. It's missing some of the infectious beats that I like unless they're there and I haven't 'discovered' them yet.

My favorite is Love Deluxe, closely followed by Stronger Than Pride. Not a filler track between the two of them!

Yeah.....somehow I also love the vibe of Cherish the Day.....the guitar licks are for sure magical....and Pearls...yep, I am with you on that...

I always felt that the message in the songs off Promise were very strong...Jezebel, War of the Hearts, Sweetest Taboo, Never as Good as the First Time....the songs were so memorable.....plus there was so much more of the sax playing....even moreso than Loev Deluxe.....But I can certainly agree that it is a close "battle" between those 2 albums for the top disc.

I think for me, the lack of horns on Lovers Rock made it much harder for me to appreciate it as much.....even though there are songs that I do like on it....

Yeah, there’s a definite absence on Lovers Rock, maybe it’s the sax as you mentioned. But I found that it became a very comforting album over time or maybe it’s just that it’s Sade. I also enjoy Promise. It almost seems that with each album there is less and less if you will until she releases an acapella album or a disc of silence. lol
