Dam Funk working on an album with Steve Arrington

found this on Okayplayer

Everyone’s favourite spaniel-haired boogie ambassador Dâm-Funk is working on a new album with Steve Arrington.

Arrington is the former singer of Ohio funk band Slave, who were active in the years 1977-87. According to Stones Throw boss Chris ‘Peanut Butter Wolf’ Manak, speaking to LA Weekly, Dâm (real name Damon Riddick) and Arrington have five or six songs down, with “all of the instrumentals coming from Damon, and Steve writing his own vocal melodies and lyrics. It’s fifty-fifty.”

It also transpires that it was actually a shared love of Slave that first brought Riddick into the Stones Throw fold.

“When I first talked to Damon, we bonded over an appreciation for Slave,” said Manak. “He told me that he had video of Steve Arrington performing in the early ’80s, and I’d never seen live footage, so I was excited to check it out. When Dâm and I met , he gave me a copy of the DVD, and I thought, ‘I’ve gotta stay in contact with this guy.’”

Following an exchange of e-mails, Arrington – who became a minister in 1990 following a religious conversion – agreed to participate in the project. Its release date has yet to be confirmed. The same goes for the album from Nite Funk, Riddick’s collaboration with Nite Jewel. Recording hasn’t taken place yet, but according to Manak they recently all “sat down for dinner” to come up with a schedule. More news when we have it.

headbang

I didnt know he had an actual video out! music Love this album...really I cant stop listening 2 it.

I think he said somehting like, hip hop has taken over so much that people forgot funk was in the inventor of hip hop and it has been ignored greatly now and he is bringing it back to the forefront. Fuck what everyone got to say, this music is alot more experiemental than most of the stuff out today with new instruments.

Sorry but i had never heard of him. I like one song of his a lot.
It would be nice if he add a couple of vocalists to his sound.
His sound is reminiscent of former rap group the Funkahawlicz of the
mid nineties(jazze pha). Some of it is just empty for me. It's like
he's attempting to be the new Tyrone Brunson. Time will tell.

I seen threads on this cat but never really checked him out. He sounds nice, similar too mid to late 90s G-Gunk West Coast hip-hop.

Intersting hmmm

I've always thought his sound was a direct throwback to 1984's boogie music.

yeah he got like 2 or 3 tracks with a West Coast sound, but the rest of it is definitley nothing but 80's funk and spaced out experimental 80's new wave tunes.

He got 3 really nice 80's slow jamz too "I Wanna Thank You For Steppin Into My Life" is love love
