Kelly Price - "Just because people call themselves gospel singers doesn’t mean they’re living a sanctified life"

I found this quote from her to be very interstong:

How have you been received by the Gospel music industry?
KP – It’s been a mixed bag. Everyone at first was overjoyed. Some of that joy turned to dismissal when people realized that I was not willing to make the announcement that they wanted me to make. That announcement was for me to say that I was wrong for all of the years that I sang R&B and that I had been converted and that I would never sing R&B again. I refused to make that statement because I didn’t backslide to sing R&B. Doing the gospel album that I did and touring with gospel artists opened my eyes to a lot more than I even cared to know about people who sing gospel music. We need to be careful about what we’re allowing our young people to listen to. I say that because I’ve been on the road with a lot of these people and just because the genre is gospel doesn’t mean that the music itself is. Just because people call themselves gospel singers, that’s just a title and doesn’t mean they’re living a sanctified life. Check my life. Chile Please!

This is the article, its only part 1 out of 3: http://elev8.com/daily-of...rt-series/

This is the most honest interview I ever read from Ms.Price, usually she's very diplomatic and private about her life(although I knew about her homelessness). She gets alot of props from me.

Its a "no shit" moment for us indeed, but rarely do you find an artist(and R&B artist at that) speak about their gospel peers in that light.

She'll get called on it, by the same folks she referred to.

The title alone has me saying Amen, Somebody!

I think for many Christians the journey to and through redemption with The Lord is just that, a journey. It's not a cakewalk (at least not for everyone, and certainly not for me), and I appreciate that people can be honest about it for once. We all have imperfections and we all fall from time to time. Being saved is no guarantee that you get it right all the time. It takes dedication and constant awareness of your actions 24/7. Kudos to her for speaking out. But I agree with Harle that she'll probably catch hell, and my belief is that it will be either from the elders in the Gospel community who are completely out of touch with understanding the newer challenges and temptations of this younger generation, or the posers who like to pretend all is perfectamundo in their world and everyone else's, and are somehow exempt from making mistakes themselves.

I don't know much about Donnie, but Kirk admitted times & again that he's full of mess & demons, he's not from the "glass house people with stones in their hands". I respect Kirk, while I don't like his music, I like how he's reaching out to the younger audience, from what I see that is.

I have a friend from Brasil that loves Kirk Franklin so much...she's an extraordinarily devout Christian who comes down like a rock on others' transgressions, but her fandom for Kirk is almost rabid and often leaves us scratching our heads saying "Girl, now exactly who is your Lord again confuse ???" anyhoo, if she had any idea about Kirk (and I guess Donnie, too) she would be deflated as all get out. I'm not going to say anything, though.

But I'm confused here, whats the purpose of mentioning their names? hmmm Are you implying that Kelly was talking about folks like Kirk & Donnie?

Nope, I was just giving examples of folks who, at the time, weren't living to what they were pretending to.

Donnie is on an album that I happen to be on as well. He sang at one of my church's annual conferences, called Azusa. My church at the time, Higher Dimensions (our pastor was Carlton Pearson), had this conference every year with awesome music acts, and great preachers each night. The church had signed a deal with Warner Alliance (the Christian arm of WB), and put out a few live records. I THINK Donnie was on Live At Azusa 2: Precious Memories (the albums were always under Carlton's name). He did this awesome medley (he did it once at our church a few years prior too). I was at that taping that night, so I'm in there clapping and singing...along with 15,000 other people of course. hahaha That was the mid 90's somewhere.

Kelly is right. Then again, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, etc., etc., can agree with her statement. Just because you sing "gospel" doesn't mean you're living it. Gospel artists suffer with the same demons as R&B artists. They're all children of the so-called "cloth" and yet they all suffer through their own hells. The Clark Sisters' bio showed that.

Well I'm sure am glad that she's being honest and not caring about backlash. Most gospel these days, Gospel is sounding like fake hip how mixed together with a bunch of "hallejuahs" and "thank ya Jesus" thrown in the songs. I like some of Smokey Norful's songs but not all of them. Fred Hammond's music is okay, but bebe & cece get on my everlasting nerves. It would be very interesting to hear of some of those gospel artists who live screwed up lives while proclaiming that they are "washed in the blood". disbelief I never felt like gospel artists were holier than thou just because they sang gospel music...most of them live lives just like those in the R&B and pop music world, if not worse.

I know what Kelly means though when the "older folks" feel like if you sing gospel then there is no possiblilty of you singing R&B (the devil's music). My grandparents to this day feel like Ray Charles and Al Green are hypocrites because they have sung, recorded and profited off of both Gospel music and R&B. confused

Your grandparents are too religious if they think Al and Ray are hypocrites. The brothers love gospel and R&B equally. As for the gospel artists, I can't stand most of them myself and I thought I was alone in thinking BeBe and CeCe were overrated. I like some of their joints (especially "Addictive Love") but for the most part, they're kinda stingy musically. I heard their latest track on Blog Talk Radio and they had the audacity to sing in autotune. confused

They don't know God well enough anyway (if there is a God lol). They follow the book so they claim but they abuse their own power so they need to stop with the two-facedness.

They aren't the only ones, that's how the old heads are. Set in their ways, me personally I love Al Green's music in both genre's. He's amazing.

Me too. To me Al Green remains a soul singer even WHILE singing gospel because he was already singing gospel in his secular career. ("Jesus is Waiting" anyone?)

I get ur point, but u have 2 look at the kind of music these guys sing now. Most people don't really sing "gospel" songs. It tends to be more "inspirational" than "gospel". "Gospel" means spreading the word of Jesus. I'm no Bible scholar, but Jesus never preached about living in big houses or driving luxury cars.

In today's society, Gospel music is about making people "feel good". Artists like Mary Mary, Kirk, Donnie, etc. has music that is more about inspiration. Listen to the lyrics.
