Great Badu Moment Heard this in the car today & was reminded of how astonished I was when I first heard this.
It's one of my fave Chaka songs & I particularly loved Erikah's humility in admitting that she "wanted to do this one at the Soul Train Awards, but she was "scared". Amazing range for this lil lady....at 3:50 she proves her chops. I actually prefer this cover to the original (which is saying something).....outta the park home run, IMHO. Still amazes all these years later. A FANTASTIC live set. Funk Is It's Own Reward

What was so ironic was that she sang this at the Soul Train Awards back in November for the Chaka tribute...

You won't find a bigger defender of Miss Badu than me but no ways on any planet is that cover better than the original 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Understand where ya comin from. Chaka is a deity round here.....but I felt that Badu "taking the risk" & picking THAT track (a VERY hard one) to cover live....minus the band (Rufus' version was superior) gave her the edge on this this night, Chaka can hit that note all day long....Badu had to reach mighty deep to rock that...I think it's more exhilarating than Chaka's studio take. For me, it really is hard to top an excellent live version of a song with a recorded version - excitment would be a key word there. What did Erykah say on her liner notes for that CD? Something about reaching up to touch the hem of Chaka's skirt. Um hum! There was a lot of love in that cover. [Apple Tree is my favorite off of that CD; "I...CAN'T CONTROL the soul flowing in me, ooh wee!!!] Chaka must have been smiling big during this tribute; was Chaka smiling big during this tribute? These two are in a small tribe of bad ass women who transcend time and space with the art-music they produce.

Evidence the audience on Badu's cover (they sound almost stupified that she "did" that). She wasn't regarded (IMHO) as much of a singer until that live explosion @ 3:50. She also asked for "energy" B4 launching into it. Might not be a fair comparo. And, as I have said, Chaka could crush her (or 99%) of vocalists most nights. Just not this night. "transcendence" is the word. She got over. Funk Is It's Own Reward
