I have see her live and if you never experienced that....well...shadddduppppp! I admit she isn't for everyone but for those folks that she is for she is just all of that and a bag of chips! Jennifer I imagine is the only singer out today who could have pulled what she did on BET Honors. It was simply perfect and you could feel the energy throught the tv. That will most definately go down as one of Jenn's shining moment. I want that shit on disc. ....and before someone pops in with a Whitney's finish comment... NO they played all the greatest performances he has been known for. Now there comes a TIME to over sing and a time not to and the only reason not to oversing in my opinion is when there are a bunch of people singing WITH you or when you are performing a song for the first time...that's just me though... Michael never over sang any of his songs. So that is a bad comparison. Now, if you said, Whitney that would have been better. However, as much as Whitney has been know to over sing at times, she is not as bad as Patti. I never said over sings, and he could never "over do" himself in perfoirming because that is what he is known to do. Have U heard a Patti record that she has over sang on other than Live? Being live and studio are two whole different experiences. Some people can take it some can't. I love when she shows what she's got hell. BRING IT. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Exactly. Patti is a soul screamer. And I love soul screamers!

I hear this all the time.. "Patti over sings" but for me who's been a fan for about half my life this statement doesn't really register.
I think that Miss Patti sings from her soul. She doesn't tone it down..she doesn't pretty it up. She just gives you that raw emotion. And this defines a true SOUL singer to me. I do think this is the reason PATTI never truly crossed over and achieved super stardom. As politically incorrect as it is.. I've heard it said.. "Patti is too black".. And I get that statement as messed up as it sounds. Her voice is too real..too soulful.. a white audience rarely can appreciate that type of singing. For Celine Dion to have taken "If you asked me to" and had a HIT after PATTI originally released it is PROOF. Even PATTI herself has said in interviews that racism played a big part in her not being as BIG as she could have been. It was the discrimination of that BIG voice.. that didn't allow her to become as BIG of a superstar as she deserved. Miss LaBelle's voice is a national treasure. And when I see the other ladies like Gladys, Dionne..Aretha get there dues I often feel for PATTI because I know how it hurts her. But what I will say is that PATTI has some of the most devout fans in the world. The love she gets from her fans and that she returns is a rare for such a shallow business. 40 plus years in the music industry and she still has SOLD OUT performances.. Go see a PATTI show and it will change YOU.

Here is where one is stuck between a "rock and a hard place". I have most if not all of her albums and while she does sound great on on wax, live IS where she shines. That being said, she does have that tendency to go off on these tangents that can sometimes destroy the song. While I am all for creativity and making a song your own, sometimes it get to be a bit much and "show offy". "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

How 'bout that live performance of YAMF though? "LHM!" But you know, here is a performance that contradicts a criticism of Dionne - "she's too pop." Dionne and Luther sing the hell out of this ... Patti was not part of a jam session, she was paying tribute to someone and she ran with it. Just my opinion Blaque. Nonsense. you can re-word it but you just basically said it yourself that he was showing off. It wasn't a "jam session" it was a rehersed performance and Prince showboated his ass off and part of me is a little proud of him for doing so because he chose the right time to do it - when people least expected it.

I disagree Blaque. Also, I love it when Patti obviously runs away with a song you reffer to it as giving it to us from her soul and how it is raw emotion. But, when Prince plays the hell out of a solo, on the night of his induction, you call that "showing off". It might have been rehersed, for the purposes of time, but when you get a bunch of musicians together to play a song and each adds their own to it, it's a jam session. Exactly I don't know where people get off pulling the nerve to say that she should TUNE IT DOWN, STOP SHOWING OFF in this day & age where 99.9% of this board bitch about the non-singing no talents of today's music business. "Showing off" The WHOLE concept of singing/playing an instrument is showing off what the avarage Joe doesn't possess. Whats next? Her singing may make some people feel alienated therefore she should stop? Gee whiz

In an industry where folks HARDLY sing, much less show off, some are gonna tell a woman who's been singing like this for about FIFTY years, is still singing great at nearly 66 years old, and has a legendary reputation despite not being able to cross over to mainstream pop audiences to "calm down" or sing the song as it's heard on the record.
Well she went to church near the end of the record too. That's where the "show off" part shows up. Patti's ALWAYS been like this. It's either you love her or you don't and if you don't, then that's cute for you.

RnBAmbassador said: The main reason I do not like Patti Labelle as a singer was displayed by her on the BET Honors on Monday night. In saluting Queen Latifah, she sang one of the few songs by her I like, "if Only You Knew". She was horrible, all over the place, totally obliterrated the melody - it was a ship wreck,
She is way too over the top for my likings. Jasmine Sullivan, on the other hand was spectacular as she covered Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" when she saluted Dana Owens (a/k/a Queen Latifah). Wow just watched the show today and had the same reaction you did to the first part of her performance, but she was on point by the end. Patti can be like that sometimes, but the backing vocals were on jam.
