Patti Labelle destroyed "If Only You Knew" on BET Honors

The main reason I do not like Patti Labelle as a singer was displayed by her on the BET Honors on Monday night. In saluting Queen Latifah, she sang one of the few songs by her I like, "if Only You Knew". She was horrible, all over the place, totally obliterrated the melody - it was a ship wreck,
She is way too over the top for my likings.
Jasmine Sullivan, on the other hand was spectacular as she covered Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" when she saluted Dana Owens (a/k/a Queen Latifah).

I have been saying this about Patti for years. They last time I mentioned her habit of "Over singing", I got killed for it. I don't particularly care for her "vocal acrobatics"....Just sing that damn song...

It's been my only peeve w/ Patti - that she just can't sing the song. Patti doesn't always have to show off. She just needs to sing it like we know it. I've never bought a live Patti album (there's only one that I know of, but there could be others), because of this reason. I do have a Laserdisk of hers from the early 80's that isn't too bad, but still. I'd rather hear the record.

While I'm not comparing the great Patti to the likes of Mary J Blah, but I'll say that Mary J can sing when she just sings. When she started adlibbing and going on runs, she sounds dry and squawky.

Patti is Patti. She's going to show off because that's who she is. Just like when Prince showed off instead of just playing the song at the R&R HOF tribute to Clapton, Patti is always going to do what she does. If she didn't, her fans would be disappointed.

lol And besides the girl's approaching 70, obviously she won't sound like she did when she was 37 (the age she recorded the original song). lol

"If Only You Knew" is about 30 years old now. lol

Interesting. I was at a nationally syndicated radio show where the subject Patty came up. When I made the comments similiar 2 yours above, they all LOST their minds. The reaction surprised me since these people spend thier lives around music.

It's not the BET Awards.... This show just Honored certain individuals in entertainment, education, medical field and so forth... kinda like how the NAACP
show is formatted

BET Honors is what we were watching.

I hardly watch the other BET awards shows. BET Comedy Awards (no), BET Hip-Hop Awards (no), BET Awards (unless a lifetime achievement act was announced and I had to wait 2 damn hours to catch them).

I don't think that Prince was showing off at all. It was a jam session and that's what some do in a jam session. Patti was not part of a jam session, she was paying tribute to someone and she ran with it. Just my opinion Blaque.

I didn't even watch that coonery. giggle I caught part of the tribute (but not Jamie cooning it). I watched the O'Jays and Don Cornelius' "when I was a little boy" speech tho. lol That's the only thing I really remember from that show to be honest with you (and Joe Jackson's ugly mugging, he looks like an old ass pitbull). lol

You're right, SINGING is a god given talent,(and I am about to use your words), "showing off" isn't. One should use their god given talents wisely....

Well you think when Michael Jackson died they were just looking for all his most normal performances? NO they played all the greatest performances he has been known for. Now there comes a TIME to over sing and a time not to and the only reason not to oversing in my opinion is when there are a bunch of people singing WITH you or when you are performing a song for the first time...that's just me though...

Michael never over sang any of his songs. So that is a bad comparison. Now, if you said, Whitney that would have been better. However, as much as Whitney has been know to over sing at times, she is not as bad as Patti.

Co-Sign this is what her fans expect. I think we know that a lot of people on this board just don't understand that RnB performers have a long tradition of hamming it up on stage. Not too many old schoolers stand on the stage perfectly still and sing the song like the record.

If you really want to see that you should stay home and watch a video.

I can understand one wanting to "Ham" it up on stage. But, not every R&B performer does this and not all theirs want to see this every time. Sometimes, you want just hear the song, nothing extra just the song. Sometimes, the other extra stuff can come across as just that...extra.

Yes, it's true. Patti fans, we want to see her shine. And Straying from a songs original recording is exciting. But when she completely loses the melody and all structure of the song it is on ocasion too much, even for the true blue fan. But Praise God for this moment in time... http://www.youtube.com/wa...M4do3KvobQ
