New Minneapolis Funk!!!

Wow! Just... Wow!!!

This is from a Danish act called Private, from last year. The song is called 'We Got Some Breaking Up To Do' and it's definitely "been tapped with the purple stick". lol

It's got it all... Repetitive synth motif... LM-1 drum samples... Background vocals mixed as high as the lead vocals, weaving in and out...

If Prince doesn't want to do this stuff any more, I'll listen to the people who will.

Here's 'Don't Be On With Her' by Miami Horror, from 2008. This has the added bonus of a squealing guitar but is definitely more dance-oriented and less loyal to the classic M.F. sound than the first song I posted. But, who cares? It riffs off 'When Doves Cry', so it's all good.

This is very recent... Lindstrøm & Christabelle's 'Baby Can't Stop (Idjut Boys Remix)'. It disappointingly uses real-sounding brass instead of synth brass. On the plus side, there's an LM-1 rimshot sample throughout! KUH-KUH-kuh biggrin

Dance, motherfuckers!!! Ow-wah!!! lol

I guess that remix owes more to M.J.'s 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' than Prince, but it's still fairly purple.

You're right, by the way. Lindstrøm & Christabelle are amazing.

Are you sure that the Miami Horror performance is from 2008? Looks more like 1988 to me lol
I like their sound but they shouldn´t have used the When Doves Cry bit.

The first clip by Private is really good. They look a bit weird but hey, it´s the sound that counts. Always good to know that there are at least some people, somewhere, who are trying to keep the Minneapolis Funk alive. Prince could learn a few things from those copycat groups because, unlike Prince, they seem to understand what people loved about the Minneapolis Funk. The MPLSound album was a joke in comparison to what these people here created.

They use all the necessary ingredients of the "original" Minneapolis Funk. Sometimes it is easier to be a follower and not the original creator of something because the disciples are often more conservative and loyal to the original art than the artist himself.

This is not only true for Prince,Andre Cymone,Alex O´Neal and Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis but also true for the movie industry, where director sometimes revisit older ideas but fail to live up to the old school fans´ expectations.

Sad that it takes some relatively unknown folks in Scandinavian countries to revive that glorious sound again while the younger people in the USA are probably totally ignorant about it, at least from what I can tell when I see how unoriginal today´s young producers are. They could learn a few things from discovering the Minneapolis Funk instead of using the same old tired samples all the time.

The first video sounds decent but the second video sounds too pop for me.

When I saw Dam-Funk last night, the DJ before him was actually playing a shit load of 80s funk-soul or boogie. I heard new songs that blended right in with the old stuff, like Evelyn King type schitt.

I loved the Private track so much when it came out that I did my own version.

Disclaimer - All of you who hate hip-hop will not dig this, but maybe you'll at least respect the fact that I was trying to expose this sound to people that know nothing about funk. I even performed it a couple of times at my own live shows and people were digging it.

I'd never heard that before. It's better than the last few singles she's released. Love it!!!

Here's former N*Syncer J.C. Chasez with his reworking of the 1983 new-wave classic 'Sunglasses At Night'. The song is called 'Come To Me' from his 2004 solo album, Schizophrenic. It includes the smutty Prince-esque lyric: "And when I'm all alone, I lie awake and masturbate"... Yeah, 2004 is six years ago, but it's still newer than Prince's 1999 album, which this reminds me of - a lot.

Amazing.

Kylie Minogue goes all Control-era Janet on 'All I See' from her 2007 album, X.

This song should have been huge; it was released as a single in the U.S. but sank without a trace. EMI wouldn't finance a video, so Kylie made her own during tour rehearsals... and it was a tad amateur. I can't embed the actual video here, but you're not missing much. Kylie also made a few U.S. tv appearances to promote this, but she looked unusually tired and out-of-sorts at the time. Damned shame. Love this song!

Some of the lyrics in this fanvid are wrong, by the way!

Snoop Dogg's 'Sensual Seduction' from 2007.

Synth strings; flat kick drum and metallic-sounding clap samples. Is it wrong that I love this so much? biggrin

Try a little CONFECTION. They cover several early to mid-eighties synth funk styles. They even have a cover of Jam/Lewis' Diamonds.

(Sorry, not sure how to embed video links.)

No, absolutely not. I love this song, too,and it reminds me a bit of Paul Hardcastle´s video King Tut because of the way he´s holding the keytar;

http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related

The music is reminiscent of Paul Hardcastle´s Moonhopper:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...PL&index=1

And of course there are the obvious ZAPP/Roger Troutman and Prince/When Doves Cry references.

It´s a cool song and I like the fact that Snoop can still make good music without talking about shooting people or other gang related bullshit. To some, he has sold out, but IMO he´s evolved. I like the laid back attitude of that video and hope he´ll contiue making music in that vein. Maybe he should spend more time with Pharell Williams again, seems to be working for him.

You don't need a YouTube account; it's just a tag command.

Use the square brackets, not the rounded ones: []

And post some more stuff! lol
