I posted the video a while ago of Don dancing in the line. I have a fond relationship with Soul Train. Cherished memories. Started watching when I was about 12 and got hooked. Only problem was I got my ass beat every time I was caught watching. But that didn't deter me. I learned to listen for my mom's footsteps and switch channels quickly. I copied every dance on the show. No other show like it. typo edit [Edited 2/6/10 22:24pm] "Let love be your perfect weapon..." ~~Andy Biersack

Dick Clark is sleezy, but this was the one thing he did right by backing off Soul Unlimited after Don raised a stink about Clark trying to steal his thunder. Don was really out of line w/ the rap comment toward Kurtis Blow. I felt bad for the dude. Hindsight and all, but still - you have to be a gentlemen to your guests.

I was shocked by the whole Soul Unlimited thing. That shows how scandalous Dick was/is. Also, why was Smokey Robinson on there-he always rubs me the wrong way, like that dirty old man always trying to pick up women young enough to be his granddaughter "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I really enjoyed the documentary up until they got to the 80s era.
I loved how they showed the footage of Marvin and Don playing one-on-one, speaking of athletes, I wish they would've showed clips of the Lakers dancing on Soul Train, and Walter Payton dancing on the show before he played with the Chicago Bears. I LOVED the fact that they finally explained the difference between funky music from Black artist in the late 70s, and disco music, and how Soul Train embraced that side rather than disco, I wish they wouldn't have focused so much on hip-hop in the 80s Soul Train era. I wish they would've showed more 80s dance footage, the age of music videos and focused more on Black artists who came out in the 80s, the SOLAR artists, Cameo, Janet, Luther, Gap Band, Rick, etc rather than hip-hop. The doc was fantastic. Never knew about Soul Unlimited. I'm glad Don won that battle. Most of the dancers they spoke with aged real well and still look youthful.

It's a very ungrateful attitude to have. Soul Train got her to Shalamar, which got her to being solo. It's a totally pissing-on to the fans who have stuck by her no matter what, and there are plenty who have, I'm sure. She doesn't have to be a negative Nancy about everything.

I wish this had been a 2 part documentary with 2 hours each One thing is for sure, when hip hop became more dominant, the dancing on Soul Train decreased "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. I wonder if Soul Train had been based in NY how would it have been different and if the impact from rap would have been more immediate. They didn't show more 80s stuff because I think Don felt the show's golden age was pre disco and I think for the most part, he wasn't crazy about the 80s "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Nah, it was made quite clear that Don wasn't receptive to hip-hop at all. But he wasn't a dummy, and he knew having rap acts on the show would be great for business. I just wish he acted more congenial. He came off looking like an out of touch old man. Probably, because that's what he was. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

I don't think Jody thought she was gonna be on top forever. I hope she didn't think that. What surprises me is that for someone who had such a huge hot streak in the 80s, she isn't really thought of today. But she really has nothing to be bitter about. Lightning struck 2x for her-once with Shalamar and again with her solo career. That rarely, rarely happens for anyone.
I think Don is upset that time has passed him by and that he doesn't really recognize music today. He really is the last of his kind, God bless him. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

It was excellent until it got up to the 1980s and then they just skipped the decade altogether except for the rap. I enjoyed the rap of the early 1980s but if I had known back then that it was going to eventually turn to shit hop, I wish Don would have just shunned it altogether and maybe it wouldn't have made a national impact.
My favorite was the few seconds of Cheryl Song. It was great to finally hear her voice. They should have had lots more commentary with the dancers. Andy is a four letter word.

Finally the white media (mtv/vh1) has brought out what I have been saying online even on this board for over a decade. Michael Jackson didnt invent/create or bring any new twist to signature dance moves which brought him to a next level. The Robot in Dance Machine & The Backslide in Billie Jean Motown 25.
The White Media whitewashed the truth with giving him credit for something that was on american tv. "He didn't make it his own" as some like to say, watch the old Soul Train Tv shows, they showed a bunch on this documentary - same exact dance moves. Which tells you how big would have been if there was a Youtube/Internet in 1982. If the real information came out. Not as big. As soon as "The moment" happened on Motown 25 - that next week there would be topics and links to the truth. But what do you expect from our White Media, they chose to tell "us" what they want from something as silly as this, to his death, BOOM MJ's dies and the white media ignores the man and just pretends nothing happened since 1983... to lets be honest major issues of the country & world. But it is finally funny to see the truth came out on something anyone can take 5 minutes on google and find out the truth about music/dance history.
