It's like funky slow jazz with repetitive choppy beats similar to hip-hop, I guess.

Jamiroquai are the band that instantly come to mind, When You Gonna Learn and Space Cowboy are two of their best songs but the more disco orientated Synkronized is the best album imo.

Yeah, 'Acid-Jazz' is such an overly-used and loose term. Bascially anything from the 1990s that was funky, or had some sax solos or something was labelled 'Acid-Jazz'.

I play in a band that plays funk/dub/reggae/dance/pop/jazz/improv kind of stuff. Often venues label us as 'Acid-Jazz' simply because it's more convenient than the former!

Personally when I hear the term, I think of Jamiroquai (pre-Funky Odyssey), Corduroy, Brand New Heavies, Brooklyn Funk Essentials etc.

Yeah, all those bands based largely in the UK from the early 90s that put on their retro hats and revived funk/disco/jazz stuff from the 70s. Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, etc. (Don't sleep on Omar, either - got some great stuff.)

'Acid jazz' was just a marketing term, really, rather than a label any of the acts really embraced. I think it was probably a play on 'acid house' that was big in the late 80s - so some clever marketeer though 'acid jazz' might make this new retro sound seem trendy.

Mr. Electric Triangle's Kosmosis is an excellent starter album for your collection. It's actually a double album for the price of a single and the second disc is called Kosmosis of the Dub.

As I recall, it's not a complete dub album of the original tracks but has some remixes and some entirely different cuts. One of the tracks that does repeat on the second disc is one that tips its hat to Prince in the title- On the originals disc its called The Track Formerly Known As ? and on the dub disc its called Previously Known as The Track Formerly Known As ?. Cute.
