Believe it or not, Timbalame, the buying public, the writers for RB magazines who crowned her a queen after a record. This is what people want from their rb females, oh well, maybe one day Teedra Moses and Angie Stone will be "in" like Keri is.

Keri has been on the scene for a while and worked her way up; writing and singing background for many others. She's a workhorse. I first became aware of her when Timbaland dropped his solo CD a few years back. I was wondering who the woman was singing on all of his songs. It was Keri Hilson. She did some good work. That's her on backgrounds on a lot of stuff Timbaland has produced. She did all of the backgrounds on "Scream" with Timb and Nicole Scherzinger. (they didn't even mention her name when the song was out because no one knew who she was) She's no Gladys Knight, but neither were singers like Barbara Weathers (Atlantic Starr). They all have a place and play their position. She's just now coming around to the spotlight after spending a few years behind it. At least she worked her way up, unlike the typical label roster chick picked solely on her looks and then given a career.
[Edited 1/26/10 10:18am]

lol C'mon now Atlantic Starr was a real band and Barbara was talented enough 2 roll with them for 4 years, two albums and a solo shot. Keri like Ashanti and Christina Milian can get by with studio bells and whistles, they can write some hits but couldn't sing live if their lives depended on it. lol

Agreed.I'm not much of a fan of the Barbara Weathers era with Atlantic Starr
save a few songs like Silver Shadow but comparing Keri Hilson to Barbara
Weathers is like comparing Omarion to Rashaan Patterson.

That's a gross overstatement. Keri is not nearly as bad, nor Barbara nearly as good as you are trying to make them out to be.
I know, I know - its cool to hate the new girls. Whateva. Honestly, in the scope of where music is now, I think its a fair comparison in terms of placement as far as vocalists go. If you had said Barbara could sing on Patti's level in 1985, people would have chewed you up and spit you out. That is the basis of my comparison. Keri is not a power vocalist but she's not down there with Ciara, either. Lots of songwriters who sing work their way up through the ranks. That's what she did. In comparison to where music is today, she's more like a Barbara Weathers in comparison to her peers. They are MID-LEVEL VOCALISTS FOR THEIR PERSPECTIVE ERAS. That's what I meant. That's all. I wasn't trying to imply that if she and Barbara had a sing-off, it would come out to a draw.

Dude don't have a heart attack over Keri Hilson. So what she wrote a
few songs for a few of the fast food artists of today. Am i suppose
to think she's special because of that? Speaking of hating the new girls.
Wasn't it you who were recently hating on Corinne Bailey Rae? lol
Pot calling the kettle black. It's fine for whoever digs Keri Hilson as
a singer or songwriter. It's not my goal in life to regurgitate this
debate over and over. Some people like Keri Hilson. Some people don't.
She's not my cup of tea. As for the Keri Hilson and Barbara Weathers
comparison, it was just a figure of speech. Neither one will be considered
among the great female vocalists when it's all said in done but at least
the shit Barbara did with Atlantic Starr(as Whitney Houstonish as it was)
and brief as it was, those songs stand the test of time more so than
anything Keri Hilson has done.

She's new, so who knows what songs will stand the test of time? I was just saying that she worked her way up; she's not just some chick with a haircut like Rihanna who had a career handed to them.

Thanks Banks and KCOOLMUSIQ! i see that she does have some R&B and Pop hits under her belt. I think she did some work with Justin Timberlake too on Justified. She's aight as an artist for now. She seems to have the work ethic that most of her peers don't have though, that could give her an edge. Being able to actually GROW as an artist and performer. If all else fails, her songwriting will keep her in the game longer than anything.

Yeah, I'm in Atlanta and I remember her talking about some remix she did to one of her songs with a local DJ on the air and it blew up into this brief Keri vs. Beyonce so-called beef.

Keri's album epitomizes mediocrity in contemporary R & B: all beats and zero substance. What sets her apart from other female artists on urban radio? Nothing.

Right. She has this weird thing going on with her head voice, too - once she goes into it, when she comes back down she sounds a mess and doesn't stop sounding a mess.

She's not a bad singer she just gave her best material to other artists. The stuff she's pushing for herself is retread R&B crap. It boggles my mind that Solange Knowles put out a creative disc and doesn't have a great voice and the women who can sing consistently heap trash upon us.

Teedra Moses is the bomb!!! She put out a classy CD and had the good sense to give 'Dip It Low' to Christina Milian(She wasn't trying to wash off all that black paint!).
