Jon Reshard

If you have never heard of Jon Reshard he is a phenomenally talented bass player who I discovered listening to Greg Howe’s “Sound Proof” album. If you haven’t heard that album, buy it, Greg Howe is one of the most incredible rock/fusion guitarists ever and can shred while maintaining melody and interest in ways most people can only dream about. It makes sense then that Greg would choose to work with someone like Jon Reshard who really is the Greg Howe of the bass world. Jon has also enlisted jazz drumming legend Dave Weckl to tap the skins one of my favourite drummers, I saw him years ago with Chick Corea and remember being blown away by his energy and impeccable timing no matter how complicated his playing. Weckl, like Reshard has a talent of playing tight rhythms with embellishments that would make most musicians yelp and yet it sounds so effortless. By the way look at that album cover again, is that a Whammy bar on Jon’s Bass?!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jon Reshard for the VERY first time at Victor Wooten's Bass/Nature camp in 2001 where ALL of us were in awe of his technical prowess. He was young and just plain on fire! When I met him for the 2nd time, it was on the very first day of shooting for the newly released GospelChops.com Bass Sessionz, Vol. 1 DVD. Although Jon was only available to be there for the first shoot and that shoot was cut short due to technical difficulties, we did have enough time to, once again, all stand in awe of his abilities on his 4-string Monarch Fodera. I am also happy to report that Jon is one of the most humble and nicest cats I've had the pleasure of hanging with! But, you want to hear about the CD, yes?

Featuring Dave Weckl and Greg Howe (with whom Jon plays bass for outside of this project) as well as others on various tracks, this album goes WAY beyond chops. My personal opinion is that Jon really wanted to make a musical mark here. Those who know him know that he can play (like... REALLY play) but I think Jon wanted to transcend the chop-meister/music-for-musicians genre and make some wonderful (yet technically proficient) music. He succeeded in every way.

From Greg Howe’s “Sound Proof” album, see him come into his own. If you've never heard of Jon Reshard, his latest album(self-titled), is a stunning work. Witness two legendary artists, Dave Weckl and Greg Howe introduce his artistry and creative efforts. It is easy to tell that the album extension of his heart. There are unison lines that leave you dumbfounded, grooves that make you do the head-bob and some truly beautifully musical moments. His solo version of "She's Always a Woman" is worth the price of admission alone!

Jon Reshard is a widely-acclaimed bass virtuoso who has been covered in both Bass Player and Jazz Times magazines. Influenced by many bass figures, including Jaco Pastorious and John Patitucci, his soulful and articulate bass playing has reached a whole new level with the release of his new self-titled album.

The new disc features the legendary Greg Howe on guitar and Dave Weckl on drums. Most of the tunes are Reshard originals, except for a moving cover of Billy Joel’s “She’s Always a Woman.”

Opening cut from the Jon Reshard album...

...Number One

Every so often a musician will come along that will actually add something to the game.
Jon is one such individual. He reminds me of Alan Holdsworth in that he's so humble in relation to his extraordinary talents.

Definitely someone to check out.

Kool, I didn't see this one --with Steve Kimmock and Rodney Holmes, too!
