Disclaimer - All of you who hate hip-hop will not dig this, but maybe you'll at least respect the fact that I was trying to expose this sound to people that know nothing about funk. p.s. That is great!!! It reminds me of a Soulwax mash-up from nearly a decade ago, which mixed 'Party People' by Alex Gopher with Prince's 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'.

Not so new - it's from 1996 - but it's better than anything Prince was churning-out that year.
It's the 'Don't Ever Wonder' version of Maxwell's 'Ascension'... I know the beats are a complete steal - but who cares? Wish he made a full album like this.

Synth strings; flat kick drum and metallic-sounding clap samples. Is it wrong that I love this so much? It´s a cool song and I like the fact that Snoop can still make good music without talking about shooting people or other gang related bullshit. To some, he has sold out, but IMO he´s evolved. I like the laid back attitude of that video and hope he´ll contiue making music in that vein. Maybe he should spend more time with Pharell Williams again, seems to be working for him. I was going to make a new thread on Snoop's Bootiez Automatic which has many refrences to Prince and sounds like an old school track. Nothing like what is on his current album Malice In Wonderland. However the song is not posted up on youtube so I can't embed it. It's an Itunes bonus track off the album that is definitley worth hearing. He is definitley one to watch out for and he really should just go on ahead and make a real old school funk - rap album because it fits his style from: Signs Doggy Dog World Tear The Roof Off Whats My Name Let's Get Blown Cool Bootiez Automatic Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I think the fact that the beats are completely and unabashedly stolen are what makes this gem of a remix so charming. I went and bought the maxi-CD back then and it was nice to see that he acknowledges the SOS Band as the "mighty mighty SOS Band" instead of just putting them in some brackets as original writers of the song.I also have the original, I love the SOS Band...obe of my favorite Flyte Time projects. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis created a lot of timeless magic with them.By the way, they were also the producers of the very first Ice-T record ( The Coldest Rap 12"). Great thread, by the way. It's almost like Prince peed on them! Very purple - maybe to the point of pastiche, but it's great!

SI've always found European bands to be faithful students of that era,,,,they seem to have such an affinity with music circa 83-84 and the thing that I love about them is they even feature some boogie legends such as Toney Lee D-Train to sing in their music I wish Shango was here, he would post a handful of stuff that would've filled a 3rd page of this thread.

This is from a Danish act called Private, from last year. The song is called 'We Got Some Breaking Up To Do' and it's definitely "been tapped with the purple stick". It's got it all... Repetitive synth motif... LM-1 drum samples... Background vocals mixed as high as the lead vocals, weaving in and out... If Prince doesn't want to do this stuff any more, I'll listen to the people who will. Love this song by Private, but for some reason it reminds me of this old tune that LA & Babyface wrote/produced for the last lineup of Shalamar. It even has a little cameo by Bernadette Cooper from Klymaxx.

This has a very "old Prince" sound, to me. Love it!

This isn't even out until March.
I know this borrows from Joe Jackson's 'Stepping Out', but once the rawk guitar starts in the chorus, it sounds a bit like 'Ooh, She, She, Wa Wa' from the Apollonia 6 album! Compare and contrast, here: http://www.youtube.com/wa...Fc3GPxuxIU

Snoop Dogg's 'Sensual Seduction' from 2007. Synth strings; flat kick drum and metallic-sounding clap samples. Is it wrong that I love this so much? In the 1990s, I would have given a rapper a pass if the music behind their rapping sounded good but not anymore. These days, I don't even tolerate full fledged musicians and singers having shit hop attitude or slang on their songs. I want a complete style change in the mainstream so it gets on my nerves when I see artists mixing either shit hop sounds, attitude, or even slang to their song because it just helps to keep the genre dominating the mainstream and does nothing towards changing things altogether. In the 1990s, I could tolerate it because I kept thinking a complete style change would occur once the 1990s were over (like every other previous decade had a style change). But when the 2000s came and styles didn't change at all, I really developed a hatred for shit hop because I see it's always going to dominate with no hope for change in the future And now that the 2010s are here and it still dominates, I don't even want to hear the slang even if the music was good. As for shit hop attitude though, I despised it from day one. . . . [Edited 1/28/10 12:18pm] Andy is a four letter word.

it lacks a certain edge.
where are the synth stabs? to be honest i dont care for jam and lewis very much. they commercialized and toned down the raw feeling of the minneapolis sound. i would prefer something like cherelle's " i didnt mean to turn you on" or alexander o'neal's fake etc. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!
