nod

But Illmatic is definitly a classic, just like most of Nas' other albums. I still like 'It Was Written' better though.
Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

To me it's not even Nas's best album as I liked "It Was Written" as much if not more than Illmatic. His flow grew by leaps and bounds by the time his second album came out. It's hard to say what the greatest hip- hop album was because the early 90s was so great and so many awesome acts came out
I'm gonna say it was of the best debut albums of all times. Just think 1992-1997 we got

1.Enter the Wutang 36chambers
2.Doggy Style
3.southernplayalisticadillac Music
4.The Chronic
5.Ready to Die
6.Only Built for Cuban Links
7.Reasonable Doubt

The list goes on and on take your pick

it actually took me a long time to appreciate It Was Written because it felt too forced and commercial, but his verses are actually quite sick on it.

illmatic is the best nas album

there are too many good albums to name one as the best.

it doesnt help that most people making lists are only exposed to one type of hiphop (mainstream)

Completely agree.

36 Chambers and Ready to Die are the only albums listed there that I like.

I think there may be a little sugar coating going on about hip hop in the early-mid 90s.
