It was a decent telethon, very classy, and very few bad performances. I liked how Wyclef changed the tempo at the end too.

Yep. And Stevie, Mary J. and Shakira were great too. nod

Note to Alicia Keys: Why are you hollering? Please stop yelling during your songs. There is a certain way to yell while singing, and you certainly don't do it right. disbelief

I was surprised he sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and he SANG it. The choir is from the church he attends in Los Angeles. BTW, the snippet of A Time to Love he sang is a fitting song for the situation in its own right

That's a nice way to think about it. But she yells every time she sings now, like she's losing her voice or something.

When I first started watching, I thought, "Oh geez, this is going to be a mess." Alicia started off screaming and off-key. She was terrible! Stevie sounded bad (as in not good) IMO. When John Legend sang "Motherless Child," I was very impressed. I think he did it very well. And then Mary J was there and goodgawdamighty, lawdamercy, takemetotheriver, chile! She SANG that song! Took me straight to church! At the end of her song, all I could do was shout out, "WELLLL!" Considering when she first started singing, she couldn't. I have come to admire and respect her as an artist. Girlfriend has come a lonnng way and has great voice now. I also thought Christina Agulera (sp) did a great job. She has a lot of "bottom" in her voice. I like her. But what in the hayell is Brad Pitt doing with that Rip Van Winkle beard? He looked like Rumplestiltskin or somethin! Shave that shit off yo face, boy!

But all-in-all, I enjoyed the show. I did try to dial in to give a donation, but I could never get through. I did it online.

like Sinbad said "you can't be bald on Wednesday, and have hair down to your back on Friday" wink

plus I have no clue why, but she persists in finding the cheapest wigs possible like she goes shopping in downtown Brooklyn and gets them on the corner for $9.99. Same with her clothes. She needs a real stylist!

In all fairness, Live Aid came as a result of Band Aid and USA For Africa, and Bob Geldof assembled Band Aid after watching a BBC report on the plight of starving and suffering Ethiopians during their famine, which was ongoing at the time. This Haiti relief telethon, as well as the Indonesian Tsunami telethon and the Hurricane Katrina telethon, was hastily assembled at the last minute right after the natural disaster, and also while the relief effort is still very much ongoing. So the tone of the telethon is going to be very different than what Live Aid was, which came several months after the initial Ethiopian relief efforts. Now maybe during the summer, they could have a Haitian relief concert which could be louder and much more festive, and it could celebrate the survivors of the earthquake and stress the long-term reconstruction of the country.

The so-called famine in Ethiopia was a genocide achieved by the Derg military and the money raised by Live Aid never went to the cause.

Mainly the "We are the world" people, Ken Kragen and others (lionel included) poorly constructed their half. Bob Geldof got it through eventually but the workers initially were dropping food from planes because they were not allowed to land in those countries, which led to the food being stolen and sold in that country, which, is going on now with alot of the orginazations in Haiti that are popping up everyday, some are puppets of the corrupt govt there. The best bet for anyone that has or will give to the releif of Haiti or other charities, work with the Red Cross, Unicef or the Organization for World Hunger, they do the right thing and are organized properly, others are thrown together by peeps not knowing what they are doing.

Its a somber event, its that simple, what were people expecting?? Light shows. dance routines, antics etc...this is why something like LIVE AID could never work today, people would be too concerned with "why sing that song" "thats too slow" "why is she wearing that" etc... I think people need to look back on LIVE AID and how that worked, guess in the 80's we were all more concerned about more useful things.

Well thats the thing, though LIVE AID was in the planning, it still had none of that "what am i gonna wear" "why sing this why sing that" crap "or they sound like shit nonsense" Live Aid for its time was groundbreaking because all of what they were doing had never been done, all planning aside, to link up all those feeds and switches, may seem SIMPLE today, but that shit was never done and the technology was not there then to do that. Look at that crap of LIVE 8, that joke that MTV and VH1 did, by putting on a show and then while bands performed i had to listen to Sway and Kennedy and some other useless hacks at the networks talk over the artists. This of course led to a harsh backlash and forced Vh1 and MTV to re-air the show and parts with NO VJ's giving their opinions which no one cared about anyway....I mean SWAY??? his opinion on the world is about as relevant as Kim Kardashians.

All-star Haiti telethon raises $57 million, so far
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer
Sat Jan 23, 4:18 PM PST

Organizers for the all-star "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon say the event raised $57 million — and counting.

"The public has set a new standard of giving for a relief telethon with 'Hope for Haiti Now,
' and the donations continue to come in," Lisa Paulsen, president and CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, said in a statement released Saturday. The group is helping to oversee the funds gathered from the event.

The two-hour telethon aired Friday night on the major networks and dozens of other channels, including MTV, Bravo, and PBS, and was also streamed live online. Stars like Brad Pitt, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and more used their presence to encourage donations for Haiti, following a Jan. 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 200,000 people.

The total released Saturday includes money raised by phone, text and the Web. It does not include donations by corporations or via iTunes, where people are able to buy performances of the event for 99 cents each, or the entire album for $7.99. Those funds also go to Haiti relief.

The "Hope for Haiti Now" CD is the biggest one-day pre-order in the site's history and the new song "Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)" by Jay-Z, Rihanna, Bono and the Edge, debuted during the telethon, is the No. 1 single on iTunes.

People can donate via text, phone or through the "Hope for Haiti" Web site for the next six months. Among the organizations who will receive funds from the telethon include Oxfam America, UNICEF, and the Clinton-Bush Haiti Foundation.
