BREAKING NEWS: The Pussycat Dolls are breaking up

In the week of March 5, 2010, Yahoo Music News was one of the first to report that PCD have finally broking up.

But there also have been reports going as far back as April 2009 that a potential breaking up was building.

April 27, 2009

Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls has tried to create a solo career in the past, to disastrous (or rather, terribly bland) results. So she came crawling back to her roots and the girls continued performing as a group. Well, when the Pussycat Dolls version of the Slumdog Millionaire hit Jai Ho was released in mid-March, the album cover said that the song was by “The Pussycat Dolls featuring Nicole Scherzinger.” Odd, but not particularly noteworthy. Now it is being reported that Nicole may actually be leaving the group to pursue a solo career (again), but won’t announce it officially until after the group’s current tour with Britney Spears’ Circus show is over. In a recent concert in Pheonix, one of the Dolls, Melody Thornton, gave a telling shout-out to the crowd: “Thank you so much for supporting me - even if I’m not featured, you know what I’m saying?” Ouch.

A rumored outburst by one of the Pussycat Dolls, Ashley Roberts, has led people to believe that PCD is breaking up. Fans were said to be waiting outside their hotel in London, when they claim Ashley reportedly came out crying and told the fans, "This is the last time we’ll be in the UK as a band. We’ve broken up. We’re sorry."

Despite these rumors, the creator of the Dolls, Robin Antin took to Twitter where she denied it. She wrote, "The Pussycat Dolls r NOT breaking up…. & IF they ever were, u would hear it from ME 1st."

She also assured fans that the girls will very well be coming out with a third album! She writes, "NOT GOSSIP…Album #3 on the way!"

Kimberly Wyatt, a less featured member of the Dolls said that she’s disappointed about how much attention is on Nicole, “It’s true, there has always been a lot of focus on Nicole which has been hard to deal with sometimes. This group was created with a foundation, they knew exactly what they wanted and they had Nicole as the focus."

Melody Thornton also expressed, “Nicole’s always had extra things going on as opposed to the rest of us, but we have aspirations as well. It’s definitely a huge misconception that we are just chilling and happy to just be members of the group.”

Are the Pussycat Dolls really breaking up because of feuding within the group? New York Post’s Page Six reports that Nicole Scherzinger (who previously tried sailing away from the five-piece pop act to unspectacular results) has sparked irreparable ire with the other members, and they’re breaking up for good. However, one particular Pussycat Doll exclusively tells us otherwise.

Says a source to Page Six:

“It is war. They have broken up for good. None of the other girls are speaking to Nicole, who they believe took the limelight, then went off to do her own thing.”

Wouldn’t surprise us if this was true, since there have been reports of bitterness between the girls for a while now. Plus, the release (and re-release) of Doll Domination didn’t exactly blow the charts away.

We briefly spoke to Dolls member Melody Thornton last week at a recent event in Hollywood—she’s definitely not one to keep mum on her views regarding her more heavily featured bandmates, so here’s what she had to say about the girls going their separate ways:

The Pussycat Dolls are currently on a break. Is this an indefinite hiatus or something more permanent?
Oh, no. Well, I don’t know… as of right now. The Dolls have been working consistently since “Don’t Cha” came out in 2005. So we need a break. They’re human bodies and minds and they need a break. It’s as simple as that. There’s nothing else behind it. Until the big man says I got a song and it’s time to work again, we’re on a break.

So if your label called you tomorrow and said, come on back and record this hit song…
Then I’d be back in the studio.

Are the other Dolls working on their own solo projects?
Yes.

How about you? You’re appearing on E! show Bank of Hollywood. Are you done with music?
Oh, no, I’m still working on music. I have to. That’s what I do. I’m not doing anything else. [This show is a] side project.

What’s your solo stuff sound like? Is it pop like the PCD?
It kind of derives from 1960s, Ike and Tina Turner, R&B up-tempo. I want it to have real instrumentation and real music. That’s what I believe real music is. As far as ballads go, I have always been inspired by Mariah Carey. I‘m a crazy Mariah Carey fan. It’s good, ’cause I can sing my ass off.

With regards to today’s news, Thornton may have been just been doing wishful thinking by calling it a “break.” Either that or she really couldn’t care less about her pop group dissipating and would rather focus on her own projects. Don’t forget this wonderful quote from Melody during a 2006 interview with now defunct Blender mag regarding her feelings on Nicole being the lead vocalist:

“I’m biding my time. Whether they want to admit it or not, we all see this as a springboard for something else. Some girls have said, ‘It’s my dream to be in a pop group,’ and I’m like, ‘OK, because I want to be Mariah Carey.’”

Well, at least the girl is consistent with what she wants.

There might be a few less familiar sex kittens in the Pussycat Dolls the next time they slink onto stage. Last month, while rumors flew around like fur after a catfight that the Dolls were breaking up, group member Melody Thornton told us, “We need a break… It’s as simple as that. There’s nothing else behind it. Until the big man says I got a song and it’s time to work again, we’re on a break.”

PCD founder/head honcho Robin Antin also released a statement to Hollyscoop denying a split, but noted that when the girl group returns, there will be “new music, new concepts, new faces and more hit songs!”

Catch what Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt has to say about the “new faces” bit after the jump.

“The Pussycat Dolls have been on a hiatus for a while now. I really don’t know what’s to come, I can’t even comment on it because I’m not the driving force behind it,” Wyatt tells Digital Spy.

Kimberly continues: “Robin Antin is the creator and there’s a lot of chefs in the kitchen when it comes to the Pussycat Dolls. They’re making their choices wisely… No matter what happens, I’ll always be involved with the Pussycat Dolls even if it’s helping with choreography or creative direction.”

Spoken like a cat who wants to ensure she maintains all nine lives. Of course, main singer Nicole Scherzinger will still be rearing her head—even if it’s in the most unlikely of places.

Jessica Sutta is the most talented of all of them. She had a great song, "White Lies" with dance DJ Paul Van Dyk.

It doesn´t shock me.

It's been hinted for years that Melody Thornton should've been on lead vocals as often as Nicole. She sings like the poor man's Christina.

sad nod

As least in my case, I hope this will push A&M/Interscope/Universal to FINALLY consider Melody & Jessica to have a better shot at solo success than Nicole. At least Melody & Jessica love to take risks outside the American dance-pop/hip-hop/r&b circle.

There was nothing to break up....there was never a contract with any of the girls for more than one record. They were brought on album by album, Melody was gone awhile ago as was Kimberely, Jessica and Ashley were last to go, but Ashley
was already doing other things outside of music, Jessica is the only one that got solo offers, Melody did some things here and there with bullshit spots on rb and rap records but she was cut loose awhile ago for her attitude.

The rumours were always there because no one had a contract and Robin Antin is keeping the "brand" alive with other girls plain and simple, just like the girl groups of the UK like Sugababes who have a new member every other week, in fact now there are no original members.

Robin Antin is now focusing on Girlicious which for now has only been in Canada but she wants them here now too, and they also kicked one girl out last year for her attitude.

To clear the record i never use the term "Comeback" for anyone, that is the HYPE bullshit word that everyone uses, now its used on Usher, the other week it was Sade, Jojo cant comeback from something that never was, had she been paralyzed and now can walk then we can talk comeback.

Jessica had 3 dance hits and 2 number ones, i told this to i believe tony or cinnie on the forum that she is the one that will go further because she can do that type of music best, i mean there were top notch dj's looking for her, and what people dont realize is that on the last PCD album Jessica is the one doing most of the other vocals other than lead, she and Nicole were a team for vocals because Melody's though good, were too "blown" to match the group.

Melody doesnt take risks at all, at least Nicole cut stuff with Sting, Jessica is the one that is strongest because she can do dance.

Well hate them whatever, but please, no one checked them? Their first album sold 8 million worldwide and with the second and single sales factored in worldwide they have over 20 million, so someone checked them like them or not, i mean 20 million is more than Prince has sold of his last 10albums added up worldwide. So u can say say they suck this and that, but not checking them?

Honey please don't throw your numbers in the situation because that doesn't matter to me. I didn't really 'hate' them as you say I just lost liking touch with them on their second album.

They arent "my numbers" first of all, and numbers dont matter to me at all either as you can see from 99% of the other artists i will post on, and we are on a Prince Forum someone that has no numbers at all anymore, im just saying someone was checking them at some point to move units, and despite the second album not doing the 2.4 the first one did here, it still moved close to 2 worldwide, and was a far more interesting record than the first by far.

Yeah i will never bring myself to use that word unless it's speaking on legit "comebacks" and at this point Gloria Estefan walking on stage almost 20 years ago after almost being paralyzed and having to have a steel rod in her back, that was the last legit comeback.
