Words of Wisdom from John Mayer

No, this isn't an oxymoron or a Zen Riddle.

In the new issue of Guitar World there is a quote from John that reminds me a lot of another artist we enjoy and admire.

"You go through your twenties, you keep churning out hits, you're touring, and people think you are the shit.
Meanwhile, you don't realize that all you've been doing your entire life was just creating your own support system of love and synthesized attention . Because you're onstage, you still haven't paid attention to the fact that you'd imagined everything in your life. It's all come out of your bedroom, it's all come out of your own architecture, but it's not rooted in any reality except that the money's real and the album sales and the respect is real. Meanwhile you can't have relationships with people because you've invented everything in your head, and the only place you're really happy is the place where you control everything."

I like John - has a great voice, writing and playing talent, and fine as hell. But something about this quote strikes me as being ill founded and disingenuous. However, it seems that his confusion is not at all disingenuous and this quote is what he has figured out for now, and could be a necessary step for self-discovery, and unrooting what is really going on for him internally. I think that there might be a place where he has been disappointed and embarrassed in himself with how he has responded to the pressure of being a powerful and public person in the world, and doesn't know how to move forward reestablishing and growing who he is as a person. So, no, not an oxymoron or a Zen Riddle. More like a cake left out in the rain. But, you know, I think that he can make it.
