New song, or a re-make --anything made on this project should be going to the relief effort and anybody participating should sign away any royalties to sale of the song. I was just saying that it would have been better to have a totally new song and if they wanted to throw in a tribute to MJ, do it so that it's just a bonus to the cd or download. People were saying they remade the thing as a tribute to MJ in addition to supporting the relief effort. . [Edited 2/5/10 13:05pm] From what I heard, they might digitally insert MJ's image within the group . Where did u hear that? The firt song was such garbage, they copied the brits "Do They Know Its Christmas Time" which was such a better effort. Im so glad Prince didnt do we are the world and dont care to ever hear this track.
I support any humanitarian effort, its my part of my job as well, but there are better ways to go about this.

Well, during the filming there was this man dressed up like a green spiderman. Then they said that the average person would be able to insert themselves within the video, so I don't know what to believe. They wanted MJ to be apart of it, since it is his song. We are the children (our children) We are the ones (one world) who make a brighter day So let's start giving (let's start giving) MJ wanted to do add some African type vocals in it, and it would have been:
We are the children (sha ling gay) Waylon Jennings protested and said no man should be singing "sha ling GAY". He walked out. He was pretty much cut out of the Jane Fonda-hosted VHS (and now DVD) of the event, but I almost feel like he slipped in there at one point though. Either way, his name ended up on the 12" single, I remember. Not sure if he ended up listed on front of the album or not.

But inserting him in with a bunch of living folks like he's still alive is kinda creepy and gimmicky. Jackson’s vocals in ‘We Are the World’ remake ‘King of Pop’s’ original vocals, footage will be used in new video and song LOS ANGELES - The late Michael Jackson will appear in the 25th anniversary remake of “We Are The World,” Access Hollywood has learned. Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones, who, along with Jackson, masterminded the original version in 1985, told Access’s Shaun Robinson on Wednesday that the King of Pop’s original vocals and footage would be used in the song and video. Michael will appear posthumously in a split-screen with sister Janet Jackson joining him. “To have Michael’s presence singing his part is the best gift we could ever get,” Richie said. “His original image and him seeing his part.” Richie called the duet with Janet Jackson “magical.” “She’s singing with Mike,” Richie said. “It was all put together with fabulous choreography. It’s magical.” The request came straight from Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother, herself, the pair told Access. Jackson is the only star to appear on both versions. The rest of the dozens of singers (not to mention rappers and actors) involved will be a new group — for a new generation. “My daughter Sophie — (when she was) 5 years old, 6 years old — she came to me and said, ‘Dad, we learned a new song in school, ‘We Are The World,’ and I found out you wrote it with Michael Jackson,” Richie explained. “How do we give it to the next generation? And (my daughter) Nicole (Richie), with her kid — she was 4 years old. And now she’s in this one holding Harlow.” “And my two daughters,” Jones added. “They were all babies together.” Other performers involved in the remake range from young stars such as Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers to Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. “When you say you’re going to redo, it conjures up al kinds of terrible images of what could go wrong. Everything could go wrong!” Richie said. “Once we got there, we realized, who do we give the power to? A totally new group. And we put the icons in, of course — Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion — because that’s the ground floor of what will make the excitement come from the newer people, to stand next to those people.” And Richie added that the good vibes were flowing in the studio. “Snoop was having the best time of his life, just standing there next to Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand. “It was just a wonderful group of people together.” Money raised from the single, due shortly, will go toward Haiti relief.

Problem is with this sort of thing, because everyone has a single line to sing, and they're mostly narcissist cretins devoid of any real musical sensitivity, everyone belts out their snippet at a '10' - except for dear old Celine, who's permanently stuck on '11'. (I've always felt that surely a more humane alternative use for her vocal talents could be found - like as the basis of some sort of machine that helps emergency service workers cut people free after road traffic accidents or something.)
Put that collective screech on a light RnB track that never rises above a '2' and you get a completely flat result that somehow manages to seem overbearing and underwhelming at the same time. Like having a torrent of profanities hurled at you by a Care Bear. Surely, just giving a donation is the way to go..... I refer you all to PJ O Rourke's analytical demolition of the chorus (from his book 'Give War A Chance')
We are the world [solipsism], we are the children [average age forty]. We are the ones to make a brighter day [unproven], so let’s start giving [logical inference supplied without argument]. There’s a choice we’re making, so let’s start giving [true as far as it goes]. We’re saving our own lives [absurd]. It’s true we’ll make a better day [see line 2 above], Just you and me [statistically unlikely]. That’s three palpable untruths, two dubious assertions, and nine uses of a first person pro-noun, not a single reference to trouble and anybody in it and no facts. The verse contains, literally, neither rhyme nor reason. And these musical riots of philanthropy address themselves to the wrong problems. It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

just listened 2 it on here- loved tony bennett, barbara, celine, pink, mary j, jhud, was that mary mary in there? There were a few others of the peeps that were in the beginning I liked ( not justin B)
Didn't mind the rap with ll cool j and others. hated wyclef what the hell? lil wayne- with the dreads? auto tune really? myley cyrus ( how the heck do u spell her name?) hated that pussy cat dools chick - um hell no why mute janet's voice i barely heard the woman who else.....so many [Edited 2/13/10 6:15am]

I kind of liked it until they showed Lil' Wayne doing his autotune reject rap, then T-Pain, then Akon, it was like one domino falling right after another.
I liked Kanye's part because it wasn't autotune, it was just him doing what he does best, but then Wyclef's annoying ass ruined the moment. WTF Wyclef? He just went into overdrive with his annoying voice and I couldn't even understand what the hell he was saying...I know some of what he was saying wasn't all English but I couldn't even understand the parts when he WAS talking in English. Jennifer Hudson was exquisite and so was Celine. I see some people are complaining that they couldn't hear Janet, maybe that was because she just lipsynching??? I seen Busta Rhymes jumping around in the back during the final rap part...though I couldn't hear him at all and as loud as he can get, I should have heard him over everybody else but instead you hear LL Cool J more than anything out of that group. And speaking of LL...he sure was looking delicious [Edited 2/13/10 6:49am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

What a piece of garbage...compeletely unlistenable. They should have done a new song not just a remake. One of the cool things about the original was that they wrote it for a specific cause...and even though it was a cheesy song...it was effective. If they wanted to do a trib to MJ, include the original with a NEW SONG.

This remake is probably the worst charity single I have ever heard.
The only remotely good thing about the remake is the fact that they kept MJ's parts in. And I cringed when Jamie Foxx did his Ray Charles impression. I don't think there's been a thread about it, but there's one other celebrity-studded charity single for Haiti out there, also a remake of an old song ("Everybody Hurts").. I wouldn't say it's awesome or anything but I think it's not embarrasingly bad either, unlike We Are The World 25:
