If they'll be using current pop artists on the remake I think I'd even prefer this version over that:

Quincy Jones: Remake Will Include 'Three Times' As Many Stars
January 31, 2010 We Are the World, the 1985 all-star anthem that raised funds for famine victims in Africa, will be re-recorded Monday in Los Angeles with a fresh batch of artists. "We'll have three times as many people as we did the first time," says Quincy Jones, who returns as producer. Plans were already underway to mark the song's 25th anniversary, but the Haiti earthquake created an urgency and vital purpose. Proceeds will benefit relief efforts there. Helping those in need "is why we did it in the first place, so why not do it now?" says Jones, who predicts the new version will have as much reach and fundraising success as its predecessor. "I have confidence, always. I'm so excited." Lionel Richie, who co-wrote the song with Michael Jackson, will coach singers at Henson Recording Studios (formerly A&M) in the same studio where the original was taped. Music director/composer Rickey Minor is on board, and the project will be filmed. Jones says no participating artists will be identified until Monday. "I'm planning to be there," Smokey Robinson revealed Saturday. "It's a wonderful idea, not only because it's needed, but as a tribute to Michael Jackson." The song, he said, "will hold up forever." http://www.usatoday.com/l...orld_N.htm

If they don't sadly interpolate MJ's original vocals, who is gonna sing his part? Timberlake? Stevie's part? Usher? Springsteen's part? David Cook, or worse, that Daughtry dude? Diana Ross' part? Mary J. Blige? Dionne Warwick's part? Rihanna? Steve Perry's part? Adam Lambert??? Again, I say: "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. [Edited 2/1/10 23:17pm] Right! You know this is going to be a shitty mess I have respect for Quincy, but damn, is it about talent anymore? Is it? Look at the 1985 lineup Lionel Richie Stevie Wonder Paul Simon Kenny Rogers James Ingram Tina Turner Billy Joel Michael Jackson Diana Ross Dionne Warwick Willie Nelson Al Jarreau Bruce Springsteen Kenny Loggins Steve Perry Daryl Hall Huey Lewis Cyndi Lauper Kim Carnes Bob Dylan Ray Charles Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Mario Cipollina Johnny Colla Sheila E. Bob Geldof Bill Gibson Chris Hayes Sean Hopper Jackie Jackson La Toya Jackson Marlon Jackson Randy Jackson Tito Jackson Waylon Jennings Bette Midler John Oates Jeffrey Osborne Anita Pointer Ruth Pointer Smokey Robinson Dan Aykroyd I mean, with the exception of Dan Aykroyd , that's one hell of a lineup "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

If they're going to do some corny all-star tribute, it might as well be We Are The World, even if that song sucks.
If they wrote a new one, it wouldn't have the same impact. Only Do They Know It's Christmas and We Are The World ever made a difference, and all the ones since then go pretty much unnoticed, even for a good cause. Including the one MJ did in 2001.

Seriously, you make one crappy mess like this at least something I can laugh about instead of be pissed about. What irks me the most is that I bet if MJ was alive he wouldn't have approved of this junk and it would have been dead in the water. But without him here, people think they can just do crap like this. Ruining a classic (sorta cheesy) but still classic song. Where is Vanilla Ice? Couldn't they book his dreadful ass for this crappy remake? Seriously. Go away modern music. Bring me back my MJ and George Michael 80s/early 90s hey-days. PLEASE!!! MJ Fan 1992-Forever

If MJ were here, he'd be the one spear-heading it. He never missed an opportunity to mark an anniversary. Or to come up with some over-blown star-studded mess to save the world. Putting the two together would have been impossible for him to pass up. And as for who's invovled.... The original one included the hot artists of the time. And their friends. And whoever happened to be walking down the street. The names of the stars involved in 1985 were ones that were going to sell the public and radio on buying into the song and the cause. It's the same in 2009. If you had Diana Ross and Lionel Richie and James Ingram and Kenny Loggins on this thing, no one would even hear it. The point is to raise money by getting the hottest acts out there on it. It wasn't about talent the first time, it was about star power. Why would it be any different this time?

Again, I'll go on record as saying I love "We Are the World." A little cheese never hurt anybody and the vocal performances are inspired. I can speak at length on the brilliance of having Stevie & The Boss duet, but I won't.

Stars gather to cover `We Are the World' for Haiti
AP, Feb 2, 2010 6:37 am PST The charity anthem "We Are the World" has been rerecorded by 80 artists who came together in the same Hollywood studio where the original was cut 25 years ago.Pink, Natalie Cole, Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, Brian Wilson and others stood shoulder-to-shoulder on risers at Henson Recording studios Monday night to raise money for Haiti earthquake relief. "This one, the enthusiasm, I've never seen anything like it," said Lionel Richie, who wrote the original with Michael Jackson and oversaw the new version with music mogul Quincy Jones, 76. Jones, who produced the 1985 anthem, announced last week that he planned to redo the song to benefit recovery efforts after the devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12. "We Are the World — 25 for Haiti" will premiere this month during coverage of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics on NBC, according to a release from promoter AEG Live. On Monday, stars converged on Studio A in the afternoon and stayed several hours. Richie and Jones worked with a select number of soloists, including Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, later into the night. At one point during a break, the musicians broke out into an a cappella version of "Lean on Me," a classic moment jump-started by singer Melanie Fiona leaning on another artist because her feet were tired. Gesturing with her hands, and shifting her headphones from ear to ear, Barbra Streisand recorded her solo over and over, completely absorbed in the recording process and stopping only to correct her pitch. Later, a who's who of rappers, including Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J and Wyclef Jean, recorded an interlude written by Black Eyed Peas frontman and producer will.i.am. Rapper Lil Wayne said he was blessed to record the tune but was surprised when told he would do Bob Dylan's part from the original. "I don't know how to sing," he said with a smile. Asked how the earthquake had affected him, he said he had Haitian friends in Miami who lost relatives in the disaster. The original "We Are the World" thundered up the charts when it was released in March 1985. An unprecedented number of top pop musicians gathered at A&M the night of Jan. 28, 1985, following the American Music Awards, to record the tune. The song featured 45 American superstars, including Jackson, Richie, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and Cyndi Lauper. The record raised more than $30 million for USA for Africa, a nonprofit organization the singers founded to fund hunger relief in Africa. None of the original performers returned Monday because none were asked, said Randy Phillips, chief executive of AEG Live and also Richie's manager. "This is about a new generation mixed with an old generation," Phillips said. Proceeds initially are to go to the newly formed charity We Are the World Foundation LLC, and then be distributed to Haiti. Some top music names were either unavailable or chose not to rerecord the original, Phillips said. Taylor Swift's touring schedule kept her from joining, and Beyonce had returned to New York with husband Jay-Z, he said. Janet Jackson, who was out of town, will contribute vocals remotely, he said. Filmed by Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Paul Haggis, the event was shot using 3-D cameras, a futuristic twist from the 1985 version. A few people dressed in head-to-toe green stood next to the celebrities as place holders so viewers would eventually be able to insert themselves into the star crowd, Jones said. Josh Groban, flush from doing his high-flying solo, said: "I can only hope this can have the impact the original has had."
