News: Jay-Z Turned Down "We Are the World" Remake, "I Know Everybody Is Gonna Take This Wrong"

Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z has revealed the reasons he did not participate in the celebrity-driven Haiti tribute song, "We Are the World."

According to the rap mogul, his participation would have tarnished a renowned classic.

"I have a interesting take on that," Jay-Z in an interview. "I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: 'We Are the World,' I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think 'We Are the World' is like [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched. I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: [Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but 'We are the World' is [musically] untouchable like 'Thriller' is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable." (MTV)

I applaud Jay for taking this stance clapping He had enough sense to realize that this remake is a mistake.

Quite frankly, the song the he, Bono and Rihana sang for the telethon was MUCH better than that piece of over sung shyt. "Stranded", came from the heart and was made to touch the heart. I don't know what part of the body, that remake came from .

I always thought the original was chessey but it worked for that time. This new thing is beyond me. They should have come up with something new.

I wonder if mike was still alive would they have done a remake?

Technically he did both with his dis of the remake, lol. I can't believe how many *cough* singers *cough* are on there autotuned out the wazoo.

You would have thought someone of Quincy's calibre would have said nope to that, but alas.

When you have a new generation of people who can sing - a la Justine, Christina, Ne-Yo, the guys from Kings of Leon, etc you have to wonder why it turned out (tuned out, lol) this way.

Exactly. Where are these dude's backbones? "No Lil Wayne you are NOT a good role model for this kind of thing, learn to make real music and GTFO", "No T Pain you cannot use auto tune, did Michael need auto tune??"

TELL 'EM WHAT'S UP!!

It really seems like anyone with an ounce of credibility left stayed the fuck away from this and I can see why.

The crap enters at #1 on the digital charts and #2 on the Hot 100 (behind the song by a certain Prince fan). In the UK it is out of the i-tunes Top 40 after just 3 days.

The UK has good taste, or it's seen as an insult to the original, MJ or all three.

I'm not glad, i'm sure Haiti will get a lot of money and help to recover from the horrible disaster, but WATW25 should never have existed. It is dire.

I am sure it is not the first. Two Glee songs in the Top 10 (and another handful of them further down) and Vanilla Ice being #2 last week (although I liked that one-great karaoke potential)

I guess one positive is all the younger fans of those lame rappers will hear them singing some worthwhile lyrics for once. For probably the last time too but maybe it'll make them download the original.

Another positive....

Usher has managed to summarise his complete lack of musicality in a 3 second sentence.

Perfect.
