I wouldn't expect to see MADONNA or PRINCE there, they also missed the boat in 1985, but so many stars who became stars after the 1985 version - WHITNEY and MARIAH most notably, should've been there, and even tho' I'm not a fan of country music, wouldn't it have been natural to see GARTH BROOKS there, doing Kenny Rogers part? And fans of theirs or not, the sheer star power of BRITNEY, TIMBERLAKE, CHRISTINA, BEYONCE, JAY-Z and RIHANNA was sorely missing. Overall, this version could've been so much bigger and better. [Edited 2/14/10 1:11am] [Edited 2/14/10 1:21am] I think Beyonce and Jay-Z refused to participate because of conflict of schedule problems (although I probably think they realised how crap that would turn out to be). Mariah Carey is in 'Everybody Hurts' so probably she also foresaw the debacle because I can't really believe they didn't ask her to participate. Probably they asked each and every one of the artists you mentioned and they all declined. There is no way Justin, Britney, Christina and Rihanna weren't invited

Not sure if its not to offend certain people's religious beliefs , or because it's an inaccurate statement. Dude changed water into wine and but was only tempted to change the stones into bread. You get so wrapped up into the artist, that you can't see their faults. As much as I am a fan of Michael, I will be the first to admit that his biggest problem was his always trying to top, "Thriller". He could not get that out of his mind and it showed in his music there after. Every cd that Janet has put out since, "Control", has had at least one track in which you need subtitles to understand what she is saying....Example..."The Body That Love's You". Great song, you just cannot understand what is being sung. Janet doesn't whisper. I know she has her faults and I'm not scared to call her out on it but vocals aren't one of them. I think you'd have to be a fan to truly appreciate her vocals in her music. Most people just listen to a few of her songs and automatically assume she's this horrible singer that whisper when that's totally not true. She has a non-spectacular chest voice and her lyrics are unintelligible half the time when she's singing in her head voice . Janet's vocal ability is not her strongest asset as an entertainer, period. It doesn't detract from her being an aamzing performer that we've loved for 35+yers, but by no means are we all going to sit here an pretend that she's some great revelation with broad range who knocks it out of the park every time . Please don't forget that Shorttrini is allowed to have his opinion on her studio performances as are the rest of us, whether we are fans or not.

And it's not just the remake itself, people, as to why this particular song is so unnecessary. The original song was intended to bring an awareness to an garnish empathy for a problem in Africa that a lot of people were oblivious to.
Now tell me, who didn't know about the earthquake in Haiti? Who didn't feel an ounce of empathy? Who didn't want to help, even they were financially or physically unable to? The song, remake or original, is just out of place when it comes to any charitable event other than hunger in Africa. Well, that my OPINION at least. For me it's the equivalent to playing "Here Comes The Bride" at a graduation ceremony. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

LOL.....But it was effective, successful, and Listenable in 1985, maybe a lot of folks don't like the Original but still its listenable and gathered a lot of great talents ,It was simple melody yet effective , but I agree that The remake sucks though, enough of those re-makes already, Not to mention that this remake gathered Mediocre talents….A disaster. News: Jay-Z Turned Down "We Are the World" Remake, "I Know Everybody Is Gonna Take This Wrong"
Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z has revealed the reasons he did not participate in the celebrity-driven Haiti tribute song, "We Are the World." According to the rap mogul, his participation would have tarnished a renowned classic. "I have a interesting take on that," Jay-Z in an interview. "I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: 'We Are the World,' I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think 'We Are the World' is like [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched. I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: [Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but 'We are the World' is [musically] untouchable like 'Thriller' is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable." (MTV)
