Albertina Walker f/James Cleveland - Please Be Patient With Me

I love this song. It just came up in my iTunes and I can't stop bobbing my head. For an early "modern-day" gospel song, you hear elements of funk, hip-hop, soul and jazz. James Cleveland was a genius.

Not to me. I don't like him at all. I avoid BET like the plague. I usually listen to the radio on Sundays or look at The Word.

It's old, but it's considered a song that influenced the "modern day" gospel. It's funky as all get out. Listening to this, you see where Kirk Franklin, The Winans, etc. came from.

James Cleveland was a real trailblazer. He was the first person to take r&b songs and turn them into gospel songs. He caught a lot of flack for remaking Gladys Knight's "Your The Best Thing" and making it "Jesus is The Best Thing". He also caught a lot of flack for working with Aretha Franklin on Amazing Grace.

I recommend u read Aretha's autobiography. She has a couple of chapters that are all about the history of gospel music.

Walter and Edwin came along after James. James got popular in the 60s. Walter and Edwin didn't come along until the 70s.

"Peace Be Still" was James' breakthrough song in 1962.
