They're shutting down VH1 Soul :( This was posted on Okayplayer's forum:
Well, I just got word from a former Intern at VH1Soul. And I say former, because as of now, she is going to lose her job. Shoot. A couple of us are going to lose jobs… or Credit Producing Internships. No official date on it as of yet, but shortly, VH1Soul will be ending all programming, and permanently going OFF the air. Forever. Yes. Quite frankly, this sucks donkey balls. For several reasons.
1. It’s always tough to see the loss of jobs. Especially Music Related Jobs. 2. For the video music nerd, and any soul music lover, this is one of the last avenues where you can get great Soul music of all varieties… Live, Recorded, documentaries…. and our alternative to the limited mainstream channels of “Soul Music” we now have available to us. As of right now, there are plans to rally and appeal to VH1 to keep the channel. As soon as I get word on what will be done and how you can help, I’ll let you know. But spread the word. I remember I used to stay on Vh1 soul and always watch soul school at 7 lol but wow I hope this is not happening , centric is not cutting it for me as far as old school goes. | |

VH1 Soul is what BET used to be. This doesn't make any fuckin sense. VH1 is epitome of shit already, VH1 Classic is crap also, if they're going to take that down, shut down all of them. [Edited 1/13/10 21:28pm] | |

Well, I never had the channel because it's on a higher priced cable package. From what I've seen over at other people's houses though, is they only play videos from the 1990s with an occassional late 80s video every now and then and an early 80s video on rare occassions which was usually an extremely popular and worn out song. Any videos past 1984 don't interest me anyway so it doesn't matter to me if they go off the air. Andy is a four letter word. | |

I've seen Prince videos on all the video channels for years and they usually play the ones that are already on the "Prince: The Hits" DVD which most Prince fans already own. I'd like to see someone play rarer ones like "Let's Pretend We're Married". Also "Automatic" and "Sexuality" which I have on a VHS tape I recorded off of BET in the early 1990s that is so old, I can barely hear the sound. Centric is not a video channel. It doesn't play videos all of the time. The only way you can even see new R&B videos is because VH-1 Soul plays videos 24/7. So when they are not playing rap videos disguised as R&B/Soul videos, they would occasionally play something new. Its not good but its better than nothing. | |

VH-1 Soul is owned by ViaCON. This isn't a real surprise to me at all that the network is shutting down. The only thing ViaCON and CBS/Pamamount really care about is reality TV. Why do we in general are even bother over the fact that they don't care about soul fans anyway?!? | |
