ON THE eve of a new album and world tour INXS are again in the running for a No. 1 single more than a decade after the death of the one-time supergroup's lead singer Michael Hutchence who would have turned 50 this month.

A Facebook group asking people to buy the band's 1982 hit Don't Change has been set up in an online effort to push the classic track to the coveted top spot - in time for what would have been Hutchence's birthday on January 22.

It comes as the group gears up to embark on a large scale world tour, beginning with a performance in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games - although the band is yet to announce who will front them on the tour.

Jim Guest, the UK-based creator of the Facebook campaign, believes the achievement would be a fitting way to remember Hutchence.

"Since his death, his achievements and the memory of what he, with INXS, contributed to music worldwide have been allowed to dwindle to being nothing more than a footnote," Guest said on the site.

"With this in mind I'm hoping we can get Michael to number one, not just in the UK but anywhere the interest is around the world, in time for [his] birthday."

It is estimated just 2000 iTunes downloads would be enough to make the single No. 1 in Australia.

The move follows a similar campaign that put '90s rockers Rage Against The Machine on top the UK singles chart at Christmas last year.

The band's single Killing In The Name sold 500,000 downloads beating, X Factor winner Joe McElderry's The Climb by 50,000 copies to clinch the top spot - 16 years after its release.
