His autobiography is an easy-going, enjoyable yet still eye-opening and moving read. The love of his life was an alcoholic and he came home one night to find her floating dead in their pool. He also recalls one of his first "big city" moments was being chased around a hotel room by a horny old man and had no idea what was going on. No one had told him about homosexuality yet...
Won't ruin all the good bits. His album was very enjoyable. He has one of my favourite voices and yes he was a very handsome man in his youth... or more accuratley before he got fat. I was surprised when I found out that he and Leonard Nimoy share the same heritage: Ukranian Jews. By luck they ended up being the two leads on Star Trek. [Edited 12/30/09 8:05am] | |

He deals with that in the book. He acknowledges his co-stars on Star Trek didn't like him (he had no idea til years later) but then brushs it off with something like "...the supporting players always over-estimate their importance. I was the lead actor...". The strongest theme of the book is Shatner sees himself first and foremost as an Actor and he takes that very seriously. | |

His 'roast' on Comedy Central is pretty good too. When he finally comes on at the end he opens with an awesome rebuttal line. Something like, "Whilst it's nice to hear you're an inspiration and influence on people I can't help but wonder why I influenced so many fat fucking losers..." | |

He strikes me as a guy who piles on a whole lot of false hubris to hid his insecurities. He also strikes me as not terribly observant. I mean, he didn't even realize until years later that his co-Trek actors thought he was a dickhead. I'm not sure if it's a case of being observant or just being focussed on himself and his goals. He admits until the first film was made he hated people bringing up Star Trek to him cause he saw it an acting job he did years ago and wanted to focus on his current work. About his insecurites, he never mentions his height or wearing elevator shoes (which he did on Star Trek) and he only mentions his hairpiece in the final sentence of the book and even then he just bings it up, he doesn't admit it. He admits he didn't have many friends growing up although like most things he didn't really pay it much attention at the time. He and Nimoy bonded over his wife's alcoholism, Nimoy had his own struggles. [Edited 1/6/10 13:47pm] | |

But Shatner's back all the same with an intriguing, introspective collection of mostly spoken-word tracks that are all the more compelling when it becomes clear that Has Been is, in fact, no joke. Ben Folds played on and produced the record, creating rich, melodic, and varied pop musical backgrounds to Shatner's world-weary, boozy-suave yet thoroughly impassioned delivery. Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins, Brad Paisley, and Adrian Belew also stop by to lend their divergent talents. Highlights include the Rollins/Shatner rant "I Can't Get Behind That" and the Folds/Mann/Shatner collaboration "That's Me Trying", which tells the painful story of an attempted family reconciliation. Shatner mixes a healthy amount of self-awareness with a just a dollop of self-mockery and then combines it all with plenty of raw vulnerability to create an effect that is surprisingly touching, highly entertaining, and unlike any music you've ever heard. 01.
