The Queen Of Hip-Hop Soul- The Mary J. Blige Thread

Yeah.. Brother 9/15 got to put it down for this sista. I love Mary J.Blige. There have been lots of things stated about this lady over the years as it relates to her career. But I give her much respect for three MAJOR reasons.

Longevity In R&B Field- How many R&B artists you know from the 90's that are still around and/or are getting critical acclaim from critics and are maintaining multi-platinum album sales? Think back to 1992, at all the r&B artists that came on the scene around the time Mary debuted, then count on your fingers who's still standing{she sure outlasted H-Town and Intro didn't she?}.

Solid Consistent Albums- To last in the music industry, you have to come with some solid consistent albums.. minus the filler. And when you look at Mary's albums throughout the last 10 years, her albums are pretty consistent. I think all of her 5 major studio recordings have been consistently good.

Distinctiveness- Once again, give Mary props. In a pathetic R&B world where vocalists seem to come off the assembly line{everybody/product is the same}, Mary has developed her own style. She really puts her all into her material. She brings the delivery and conviction in her vocals that really grabs the listener.

Plus, I like Mary's whole vibe. She's got that"around the way lady" thing going for her... tough but still kinda sexy.

Give it up for the Queen for Hip-Hop Soul!!!

Brother915, I'm soo PROUD that I'm not the only huge fan of sistah Mary J,,matta o' fact I'm MORE proud that such a respected orger like you dig her and post a thread about her. Child, You sho saved alot of troubles becoz I was going 2 post a tribute thread about her.

PPL here are sooo shady 2ward her(4 alot of shallow reasons). I had the upmost pleasure to meet this lady in 99 when she came here in Halrem world 2 promote her LP "Mary" and maaan what a beauty(Inside & YES out). I had a very honest conversation with her about relationships(in general), womanhood, living in the ghetto, racisum and I tell ya,,she ain't ignorant AT ALL. Sistas(and yes white women) look at her as an inspiration. Hell even the fellas find her a big inspiration.

My fave LP from her is "Mary" becoz its the MOST honest effort she eva did. There's a song she did with her ex-lover K-Ci called "I'm Not Lookin" and you have to listen 2 it esp at the end where she FOUGHT with him(A REAL WORDS FIGHT) and she ends it with "I know you're sorry". Its DEF the most honest duet she eva did in her whole caree.

I love her voice, sure it ain't the best voice in the world but she sho can SING circles around any artist 2day, its raw, full of passion, anger and bluse(My TYPE of voice,,,period). Besides, she can sing with mixed/complicated emotions in one song that NONE of them over-singing ballads divas(Whitney-Mariah-Celine) can pull these kinda emotions like her.

What about her personality??? one word "REAL" what you see is what you get, I've neva seen a high profile artist speak their minds like she does. And when I mean "speak their minds" I don't mean that they're trashy and nasty like the way Madonna acts,,,NO SIR!. This is the most celeb that I RELATE 2 matta o' fact alot of my family & friends compare me to her since we both share common stuff(whether in persona or the way of dealing with life)

What I love about her music is,,its uplifting and in the same time it reflects alot of things in life.

She's indeed the Queen Of Hip-Hop and YES Soul

Mary J,,,what you say lol

How can i LOVE somebody else
when i can't LOVE myself enough 2 know
when it's time
time 2 let go ...

Not the greatest singer. Not the deepest lyrics. But many have been there.
My favorite album is "My Life" simply because it WAS "My Life" at the time of its release so it's like a cherished item in my memory "time capsule."
But stuff like "What's the 411 - The Remix Album"? ... the Changes I've Been Going Through single? ... still banging.
Gotta go find that single now.

It was a weekday and it was posted online very late. Only five people showed up, but they let us inside. She was sitting on the couch in the L4OA room watching Rave Un2 the Year 2000 on the big screen. We sat there for a while and finally Prince told us that it was intended to be a private party and we had to go home.

Yup! That's what they call her...

From her first album, the ultimate song I hold dearly to me was "Love no limit" and "You remind me", I also liked "Real love" like most people, and "What's the 411"...

The album "Mary" was just really beautiful..."All that I can say" was my favorite,

the last, I haven't heard much but I did like "No more drama"..I didn't realize she had a couple of other albums, but she has definetely made her mark!

I wish she'd put out a greatest hits compilation already! smile

Actor Stephen Baldwin loves him some MJB. I once heard when he phoned in to Hot 97FM in NYC. Mary was performing somewhere at the time and he'd caught the show. He seemed whipped.

Who'da thunkit?

i think what we aren't taking into consideration is that we have witness a transformation in her personal life so this is why the music has changed at bit over the years. People grow up!

I really enjoy Mary J. I saw her live last year. She was very good!!

It may sound stereotypical 2 some o' ya'll, but its easy 4 me to relate to her music and support her 2 the fullest being a black female who've grown and witnessed the life in the ghetto. I feel like I go through what she went through and its like I see what we both go through in her "music".

Hell, its not critical like Me'shell, neva poetic like Lauryn Hill but she still tells the truth in her music. Its full of passion, anger, soul and guts just listen 2 her lp "Mary".

Man, would it be enough 4 you if I told you that she's getting MAD PROPS from every legend out there from Aretha 2 Chaka 2 Stevie. Even PRINCE came 2 her concerts and hell, if Marivn Gaye is still alive he would've supported the sistah.

Hey Rhondab..I was at Towers Records and it had a release date of 3/03/2003 for a new Erykah Badu EP called Worldwide Underground. Do you have anymore info on another one of my favorite female artists's upcoming EP?

Mary J is amazing, intense, beautiful, soulful, and represents women VERY WELL!

I've bought all her albums and each one is just better then the last...IMO...

I've yet to see her live but plan to. Her version of "Misty Blue" on her live album can bring (and HAS brought) this grown ass man to tears everytime!!!

Back in '97 when I lost a ton of weight...I went to a club lookin very fierce and when the D.J. played "I Can Love You"...I danced...I smiled...sang along and for the first time started to "love" myself! Cheesy...maybe...but low self-esteem could be a mean mutha fuka!

Thank you Mary...and I'm sure you'll save my soul many more times in the future!

I love her! Loved her from the start. And I saw her for the first time back in March of last year. She kicked my ass! I'd have to say that 'Mary' is my favorite of her albums but they're all wonderful. She's got some of the most meaningful songs of the past 10 years. I'm still waiting to hear someone top the "Love No Limit" remix for pure emotion and funkiness. One thing I love about her is how serious yet funny she is. Everything is do or die for her yet somehow she's managed to survive. Endless respect for Mary. She is the Queen of Soul in my book.

Mary testifies. She got chu'ch all over her and I love her because of it. She preaches the truth as it is lived and experienced by everyday people. She don't need any ideology to connect, just soul.

Just raw soul channeled and unhindered by production. I was worried before I heard the Flyte Time stuff cuz they have a tendency to overproduce... but Mary's voice just soared above it all.

I once saw her do "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" around the time of her first release and that was all I needed. Watching her bring down the house at the 2002 Grammies with "No More Drama" just reminded me of that lil girl I saw about 8 years ago saaang with all that emotion and feeling.

She def is the queen of hip hop soul... and no pretenders will ever be able to take that away from her.
