This song is consider to be first Speed metal song: http://www.youtube.com/wa...9PJ2uxiUGc Prior to the synth era, Queen successfully meshed all elements of rocks. Stone Cold Crazy was brazen for it era. Even when punk emerged on the scene, something like the song "Sheer Heart Attack" fit in well. They just had their mojo workin in the 1970s. The 1980s? Tolerable, but became cookie cutter in terms of some of their albums, although they were still a force "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Radio GaGa has a nice feel to it, as does I Want To Break Free. I also like Innuendo and I Want It All. But their best work was their highly original 70's material * * *

Truly a band that defies a "label". I'd posit that that's what made them so special...that incredible versatility....and doing it all with consistant flair.
Ain't ever gonna be another Freddy.....they were just one of those rare things in Pop....almost a gengre unto themselves. LOVE "Stone Cold" & many others. Essential. Funk Is It's Own Reward

Queen is the band that defies any label. They did it all: glam rock, metal, funk, opera rock, rockabilly, disco, techno, new wave, pop, etc. They did it all.

True. They took elements of glam rock and amplified it due to the showmanship of Freddie, but at their core, they were hard core rockers. For me, Queen I is one of the best debut albums ever by a rock band. What gets lost in discussions about Queen is that they had FOUR great songwriters who can all lay claim to having a hit. Queen's the first group where each member was inducted to the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. I didn't know that. I have said it before, John Deacon in particular was grossly underrated as a bass player and songwriter "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

The thing is that member for member, Queen is the best overall band, no band has the top notch playing at the each position and of course the best frontman ever. May's Guitar, Deacons Bass and Taylors Drums are the best blend of any band ever, and something people never talk about are the harmonies, sure Freddie was an amazing vocalist, but people forget that Roger Taylor is doing the high parts in Bohemian Rhapsody. Yep. What is amazing is that they were amazingly diverse musically and despite the 1980s being fairly ho hum, they transitioned through the decade quite nicely. By chance did anyone see the Mojo Queen Tribute issue from 2008(?). I remembered Brian stating that Freddie had ruptured his vocal cords during the recording of "Another One Bites the Dust". Oddly enough, John was Freddie's biggest supporter during their move to synths with the two of them often collaborating on various musical ideas during the time. Needless to say Brian and Roger hated the whole synth era, which led to numerous disagreements during the era. I'll see if I can scan the article and post it here tomorrow (if possible). I hadnt heard about his chords, but in interviews that i have they always talk about how they fought over everything, and i think thats what makes a great band, realizing that the band is bigger than the individual, they all loved different sounds and things like that, and did those things solo, but as Roger said when they got back to Queen it was like coming "home to mother". Their contributions to rock are so understated. I actually was introduced to their music through my brother. Like many non fans, I thought they were campy as hell and had some great pop songs. When you dig deeper, they had a serious rock pedigree. Who would have thought a Brit rock band could have a number one song on the R&B charts (Another One Bites the Dust). I agree with you that the inner turmoil keeps the creative juices flowing. I would have loved to have seen what "Made in Heaven" would have been had Freddie lived through the sessions. The lyrics to Mother Love are his finest. One other thing of note: The lyrics to Under Pressure, while attributed to David Bowie and Queen are all actually the work of David Bowie, according to Roger Taylor. John had laid the bass for the song and the band was stumped attempting to come up with the lyrics. According to Roger, Bowie pretty much came up with the lyrics by himself. As Roger said, "David always had these ideas....he was quite precocious". As a group, this is one of their crowning musical achievements (IMO) "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

As Roger said, "David always had these ideas....he was quite precocious". As a group, this is one of their crowning musical achievements (IMO) Yeah you have to dig into all the albums and look at them as totally different ideas, Queen was always wanting to change things, bands have to fight, the best ones (at least my favorites) have always had issues in the workings of a record, but thats why Queen was very unique because they did fight alot, but they also put it together, they worked on each others stuff, where as say the Beatles, Lennon and McCartney almost never worked together though it was billed that way, many times they didnt even play on each others tracks or create together. So there is genius in both, but often the time, a band gets stronger when they fight and work it together rather than just doing it themselves. But clearly album cuts people need to dig for All Dead All Dead, Jealousy,You take my breath Away,Spread your wings,Keeping passing the open windows,Is this the world we created,Dragon Attack,Need Your Lovin Tonight,Bijou,Dont Try So hard,Mother Love,Winters Tale,Ride the Wild Wind..... Considering the new thread "queen" Lady GaGa got her name from their song you'd think there would be more interest in them musically "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Queen is as ROCK N ROLL as it gets!

Interesting statement. Q: Name a Rock band with the same or better musical skills that only has 3 members. A: King's X (my opinion of course that i'm prepared to back up) Not a knock on Queen but a statement like that (not indicated as an opinion) begs a challenge. Calling them metal is a freakin insult Exactly. Queen is one of the all-time greatest ROCK bands ever, And while some of their work has some metal edge to it (as well as punk), they basically did everything. Who else could do crunching guitar (We Will Rock You, Tie Your Mother Down, Stone Cold Crazy), operatic (Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody To Love), funk (Another One Bites The Dust, Body Language), rockabilly (Crazy Little Thing Called Love), synth-pop (Radio Gaga), pop (You're My Best Friend, I Want To Break Free, A Kind of Magic), and power ballads (Who Wants To Live Forever, The Show Must Go On). I don't believe there has been any band that has been that versatile musically, including the Beatles.

They always seemed more "rock" in a live enviroment. On the radio, it was hard to tell what category their next single would fit into until you heard it.
I can't think of another band like them.
