Mariah Carey's spacey acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Tuesday night has been buzzing around the Internet. And yes, Carey was indeed buzzed – on bubbly – when she gave it, she says.

The singer-turned-actress, who earned the breakthrough actress award for her social worker role in Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, says she was having "splashes of champagne" with Lee Daniels, close friend and Precious director, prior to taking the stage.

"We'd been sitting there, celebrating this whole time and having little splashes, and I hadn't eaten," the diva says, adding they didn't want to be late and rushed in to the event.

During her speech, Carey told the audience, "Please forgive me because I'm a little bit um, yeah," leading some to wonder whether she was drunk – or just nervous.

It was apparently the former, and Carey says Daniels, who presented her the award, was to blame. "The thing is, me and Lee hadn't seen each other in a while," she explains. "I love Lee, but he's a bad influence!"

Carey also offers a few words to anyone wagging fingers: "If people don't understand me and they just think I'm this girl that stands by a microphone and sings "Hero" then they're definitely not gonna get me," she says. "But if people knew me they'd understand and have a sense of humor. And basically that's what gets me through life."

While the singer/actress looked glam - if dangerously busty - in her mermaid-style gown, it's clear Carey didn't go for an experimental walk before donning the tight dress for the award ceremony. Carey barely made it up the steps to the People's Choice stage, with more than a little help from her husband Nick Cannon.

Once arriving to take the award for Favorite R&B Artist, Carey appeared unsteady on her feet, but remembered to call out God, her crew and her husband "for helping me with this dress because ... it's a drama," before coyly thanking Cannon for "many other things I probably shouldn't mention."
