The tribute concert stuff; fine. Random tracks from an unrelated GM concert; not so convinced. Finally the weakest track from 'Sheer Heart Attack'??
A bit too hodge podge for mine.
...at least it didn't have Elton John vomiting over 'The Show Must Go On'.

Even Prince's One Nite Alone Live was from different concerts. It's not a new idea that perhaps a couple of different shows are meshed together for a record or a DVD.

The songs themselves are great. "Killer" was a big hit in many areas, and the song and the EP went to #1 in the UK. I have to say that as a live verison, GM really gave Adamski/Seal a run for their money on the track, especially with mixing it with "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". To my knowledge he only did 3 songs at the show, one of which was a duet with Lisa Stansfield (the other solo song was "39").

Yes it was a hodge podge, but I don't believe, for this particular EP, that equates with it being dismissed. I think it's more of an essential because GM has never released a concert of any sort of his (personal tours) in full. There's always been songs here and there leaked out, or released. He's fantastic live, and I love that there are little nuggets out there of his live shows. Live In London will be the only DVD concert he ever releases in its entirety. (In fact, the audio that people have is just ripped from the DVD - there's no official CD from that show).

It's the same argument with releasing random live stuff like the two or three videos from Unplugged that he did, the song with Elton John, etc. I'll take what I can get.

I don't remember the whole concert, although I've seen it. I wasn't a fan of "The Show Must Go On" back then, so I probably dismissed Elton's performance of it by default, anyway.

"HOW YA FEEL BUFFALO? HOW YA FEEL?"

I BEGGED my mom to get me this record. It was 9.99, which was SO pricey back then for a record. I was too young to work, so I depended on her to get it for me. I forget if I eventually saved money and bought it, or if she bought it for me. I remember it being a Saturday, and I spent the whole afternoon listening to it. I still wasn't too familiar with previous Jackson's material, and with the hubbub of Thriller, I was left a bit wanting. But I still loved the album. Still do.

Love when he says that. I wish I could have seen the show.
9.99 seems almost like a steal now at least for a physical album.

I know. I have to check but I think the only others I have are Going Back to Indiana, Sade Live, John Mayer, Kylie Live in New York and I just got that... um... Erykah and Jill Scott... I really can't think of anything unless we're talking old jazz on vinyl that I inherited which means I have to go digging. I don't even think I have George and Queen eek

I think the "How ya feel?" has to be Marlon or Tito. Jackie has a rather high voice, so it doesn't seem like it'd be him. Might have been Randy.

These three, which seem to be cut from the same cloth in many ways, are probably my favourites. I love the fact that it's live soul music, with passion and spontaneity, and with great musicianship. There doesn't seem to be much of that around today, sadly, even amongst the best of the neo-soulers.

Hey Deebee, I'm so glad you mentioned Bill Withers' Carnegie Hall album!
It's just such an amazing gig but sadly so often forgotten about.

A few others of mine are:

Hendrix - Band of Gypsies
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
Dylan - Live '66
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Jeff Buckley - Live @ Sin-e

U know, Bill Withers is pretty much forgotten about. They play the same 5 or so songs from him on a regular basis. The rest they avoid.

I see your point, but selecting tracks from one tour (as Prince did in your example) has a lot more continuity, and is generally a more coherent idea, than combining tracks from a tribute show, your own show, and a completely unrelated studio track. That's the only point I'm making.

As I said the quality of performances on the disc are not in question. George's 'Somebody To Love' was one of the highlights of the whole FM tribute.

Given the lack of rehearsal time for that show, it starkly revealed which singer's were genuinely Queen fans; Namely GM & Gary Cherone.

It was that performance that turned me onto "Somebody To Love". I just never got into it early on. Queen was hit and miss for me over my youth. I stuck to like 3 songs from them. As I hit my 30's, I started to listen more as I remembered it. GM's version really made see how folks loved that song, and I took another good listen. Moulin Rouge! also got me to listen to "The Show Must Go On" again.

If we can include boots, then One Nite Alone Live and Indigo Nights are getting kicked from my list quickly. lol It's Prince, though, so I'll take whatever official soundboard stuff I can get, along with the boots.

If I included live DVD's that didn't have a CD equivalent, the list would have been even longer - for a start Brian Setzer Orchestra - Live In Japan would have been there.
