It was a great article. Informative. It gives me hope that with vocal training she can restore her voice.

I don't understand why all these vocalists who depend on their voice to make money, don't travel with a vocal coach.

I'm sure Whitney IS traveling with a vocal coach. I just heard some of her performances in Russia. The voice is there in spots but still needs work.

The voice is shot. Period.

As much as its fine to give an analysis of what happen or what factors cause "The Voice" to change it's done. I've spoken with some voice coaches here in Chi-Town one thing they've all pointed out Ms.Houston can't control notes in the mid-area.... a vocal range which is suppose to be singers comfort zone. Granted the filming and the sound of the Russian concerts I heard were not all that great but her performance at GMA and subsequent performance, Ms. Houston has no vibrato in her voice, none. In fact, she's been hedging a bit with backup singers and "talking" singing because she can't sustain notes through out a song. Will voice training help? Yeah, some, but when we spoke about this in the last thread having a voice coach teach proper breathing and voice lesson isn't a cure all..... especially after the fact. Singing in a lower key isn't a cure all, you still need to be able to sing in key, control the notes and sing fluidly.

It's crack cocaine first and foremost. Her lungs have been badly damaged and burnt. This accounts for her lack of vocal stamina/inability to hold a note and being out of breath very easily. I did notice though in recent TV spots that she's getting better vocally - but she'll never be what she used to be singing wise.

Almost all professional singers' voice gets huskier as the years pass with live performances everywhere, so the high-range register is not likely to sound as clear as it once was and it needs more straining to get it right at least. (Think about what happened to Mariah-I feel sorry for her.)

and yeah drug abuse added, then your voice gets damaged completely.

Mariah's vocal decline is more down to poor supporting vocal technique which she's had from day one. She's abysmal now.

Mariah's voice is sounding better. Better than Whitney anyway. In addition to drugs I also think Whitney's diet habits may have also contributed.

There doesn't need to be a complex explanation. Years of abuse to her voice caused the damage. Many singers get old and maintain their voices. You just have to take care of it. Opera singers abstain from drugs and alchohol, and while doing shows, they can go weeks without speaking. Its their job, and their voice is essential.Pop singers should do the same. Also, technique is very important,. Mariah's vocal decline was mostly due to bad technique, and not drugs or alcholol. Christina Aguilera anmd Kelly Clarkson also need to watch out. All that shouting can't be good for their vocal chords. Look what happoened to Alicia Keys. Hear how she sounds on the new album?

Great Read. I take vocal lessons myself, and I too can hear how dramatically her voice has weakened. It's so sad to hear. sad

Here's a question, when was her voice 'shot'? Could she still sing in 2000? How long ago was the damage done? When did she stop smoking?

Whitney's voice is not shot. She just doesn't sound like she did when she was in her 20s/30s and pre-drugs. She still sounds 10x better than these heffas out here now so all ya haters can go eat doody biggrin

It was shot in 2006. It had difficulty around 2002-2003 and in 2007, blame it on her recent rehab and the cold when she tried singing. Here's her in 2009:

Her voice sounds real good here. So it ain't permanently shot.

Drugs were the "nails in the coffin" for Whitney's vocal. But I also agree that hitting too many high notes can push anyones singing vocals to the limit.

cool No worries. I came across it while looking up stuff on techique and exercises etc. I remembered folk are always talking about her voice on here. I was very interested to read the stuff about her bad technique, like the jaw wobbling, I've seen that in a lot of singers and didn't realize it was a bad thing...

People just need to accept the fact that Whitney has permanently damaged her voice by smoking and using drugs. What's wrong with celebrities? If I was making millions of dollars, I sure wouldn't screw it up by destroying my money-making voice.
