Her problem, of course, is that nothing on the album is nearly as amazing or immediate as She Wolf. Just a ton of non-single filler. This has been a problem with her albums since Laundry Service - one (at most, two) great singles and the rest is unreleasable.

If the entire album was as strong as She Wolf, she wouldn't have a problem.

Really? I dont have the album but I think She Wolf, the song, is terrible. Both the current USA and world singles are much better in my opinion. So if the rest of the album is nothing like She Wolf I would actually consider getting it. I thought that was why it did so badly, because of the first single.

It's all a matter of opinion, certainly.

Give It Up To Me is some generic stale piece of 2006 Timbaland trash that was supposed to appear on Shock Value Vol. 2 until Shakira's crew, realizing they had no followup song for the US market, bought it back from him and slapped it on the US release of She Wolf. The result was a generic, dated song that flopped miserably. She even slapped a rent-a-rapper on there. :S

She Wolf actually did quite well, selling over a million copies digitally, and peaking at #11 on the Hot 100. It wasn't a Hips Don't Lie kind of success, but nothing they release is going to outpeak it.

It was a disaster from day one. The album was leaked 2 months prior, with alot of different tracks and mixes. The first single was more of a "shock" single than anything, but Shakira has lost alot of her base with this "experimentation" of working with hip hop producers, trust me the latin community that respected her does not feel that way anymore. Plus the whole english launguage album thing is not the "in" thing right now, it comes in waves. She really needs a strong latin album with latin producers again. So its not that its a flop (because in terms of $$invested, it wasnt), its that it just wasnt a good record or choice of "experimenting", ask Duran Duran's fan base what they thought of "red carpet massacre"

Yeah, I would doubt that given the amount of promotion she's been doing/getting since She Wolf was released.

It was a disaster, when your guitarist quits becuase the producer doesnt want "guitars" on the album, you have issues. Its great to experiment, but to eliminate what makes you, then you are just asking for a backlash

I've never been a Shakira fan, and IMO she has a horrible voice. Clarification: I don't think she's a bad singer, I just think the color of her voice is incredibly annoying and lacks emotion.

Now that that is our of the way, I really do think Shakira-in a way-is just another victim of the latin stereotype. Don't get me wrong, I do think she was a willing contributor to this, but it seems like it's really hard for her to experiment with other music genres because she is expected to do the latin-middle eastern thing all the time. Her two biggest non-spanish international hits Whenever Wherever and HDL are pretty much the same song with the same ass shaking stomach rolling movements. Same with her biggest international spanish hit: la tortura. She didn't dress "exotic" for the Latin audience but she did the same ass shaking convulsatory dance movements she always does.

All other music attempts she has tried haven't really been well received. Part of the problem is that her dance influenced stuff lacks the punch of Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, and her slow "poetic" songs lack the depthness of Radio Head. Her voice doesn't really convey emotion very well either. It is either, sexy groans or annoying lalalala.

She needs to define herself and stop these identity crisis. We all know her music is not deep so she needs to stop pretending and embrance her superficial pop personality. lol
I am simply better than you...end of story.

Yes...

I thought the album was going to be better than I what I heard come out of it.

Gypsy

Spy

Why Wait

She Wolf

Did It Again

Are ok but do nothing for her career, except for Gypsy..its one of my favs off the album. Why Wait comes close but there is something too mechanical about it...no emotion. She just doesnt fit too well with that hard crunch edge Pharell gave off in Madonna's album.

*Sigh* Why do people keep making statements like this? Especially about females? confused

So looks and ass is all it takes? That's it? So tell me why Oral Fixation 2 was flopping epicly until she re-released it with Hips Don't Lie so it could go on to sell 1.8 million copies? She looked the same when it was flopping as she looked when sales picked up.

The thing is that people are confusing her Latin album sales with the English, she had ONE big enlgish album, "laundry Service" case closed, it was riding the wave of that current latin crossover, which was the Jlo,Ricky Martin,Marc Anthony etc...shit even Paulina Rubio had a "Gold" single and album in english, but that was a phase that this public was going through. Now if Shakira would get back to basics and do a latin album without bullshit rappers, she would be right in there in her genre again and gain back some respect she has lost in the Latin community. Paulina Rubio is one that dabbled in english too, but didnt sell out, she went right back into her genre and has not lost a thing, as a matter of fact she sells more now at 39 then when she was in her 20's, total opposite of what "our" views on AGE are.

I was DJing a hip hop night and for some reason "She Wolf" was requested. I don't DJ that often and I realized it was just a glimpse of the pressure to play certain pop records if I had a regular night so I went home and listened to it. I was thinking... hmmm damn, this schitt is sorta jammin'.

Personally I enjoy the album "She Wolf"...there are really no bad tracks on it. My only issue is that out of 16 tracks, there are only ten originals. 3 versions of She Wolf, 3 versions of Did it Again, 2 versions of Why Wait and 2 versions of Gypsy. I would rather have had a bit more on the album and not all the extra versions of songs tacked on. With just the 10 original tracks, the whole thing is barely a half hour.
But sales wise, unless she can find a single to promote it (one that's better than "give it up to me") it will go down as a flop.
