His death, albeit can't be ignored--his fans won't let you--because he was an enormous celebrity. It would be like George Lucas passing away. Wether you're a fan or not, you'll hear about it.

Your'e attitude (and mine) is much more common in the USA where avid fans tend to be viewed the same way avid Prince fans are viewed--an odd curiosity.

But, I have noticed that outside of America, sometimes he represents the whole of American music in a nutshell. When people think of American music he almost always comes up. Here in Thailand they assume that as an American I'm a fan of MJ, and when I say that I actually didn't care for his music, they're shocked.
